Fire damages company that shreds tires

YOUNGSTOWN -- A fire caused about 100,000 worth of damage at Enviva Materials LLC, a company that shreds tires and turns them into useful products.
The company reported a fire about 5:55 p.m. Wednesday at its location in the Performance Place industrial park near Poland Avenue.
Tires being shredded by a grinder caught fire and traveled through the company's duct system, said Youngstown fire Battalion Chief Robert Hian. The fire department had to tear apart portions of the duct work to extinguish the fire, he said.
The fire was contained to the company's duct system and machinery, with the building experiencing minor smoke damage, Hian said. The company will be shut down until its machines can be repaired and resume operations, he said. He didn't know how long that would be.
