Rivera out as Bears defensive coordinator
LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Chicago defensive coordinator Ron Rivera was out of a job, but not for long. Just hours after the Bears announced Monday he wouldn't be retained, the San Diego Chargers gave him a two-year contract to coach their linebackers.
Rivera, who has talked with eight NFL teams about their head coaching positions over the last two seasons, had a three-year contract with the Bears that was set to expire next week.
After it was announced he wouldn't be coming back to the Bears, Rivera vowed he would land another job.
And he did, getting a deal to join new Chargers coach Norv Turner. Rivera had just interviewed for San Diego's head coaching job last weekend.
Tour of California
SANTA ROSA, Calif. -- Two-time Olympic track gold medalist Graeme Brown of Australia emerged from a massive finishing pack Monday to claim a photo finish victory in the crash-marred first stage of the Tour of California. Dave Zabriskie, one of America's most accomplished cyclists, was involved in the crash and was forced out of the eight-day race with head and wrist injuries.
Race leader Levi Leipheimer of Santa Rosa was involved in a separate, massive crash at the start of the second 2.9-mile finishing circuit through his hometown.
He finished more than one minute behind Brown but the five judges made a discretionary ruling and awarded the same finishing time to Leipheimer and the several-dozen riders in the accident.
Leipheimer, who won the prologue last year and again Sunday, maintained a one-second lead over first-year pro Jason Donald of Brighton, Colo. Benjamin Jacques-Maynes was third overall, trailing by five seconds.
