Kick-off Friday to feed the Valley's hungry

YOUNGSTOWN — Second Harvest Food Bank’s 16th annual Harvest for Hunger event will begin with its kickoff at 9 a.m. Friday at the food bank, 2805 Salt Springs Road.

Community leaders, individuals, local companies, civic organizations and schools that are participating in the annual food and funds drive will be at the event.

In 2006, Harvest for Hunger raised more than $60,000 and collected more than 27,000 pounds of food in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

All food and funds collected here stay in the tri-county area.

Harvest for Hunger takes place during the month of March in 19 Northeast Ohio counties and has generated millions of dollars and pounds of food to feed hungry families. March was chosen because donations of food and funds are typically down this time of year.

Harvest for Hunger sponsors include Giant Eagle, WFMJ/WBCB, Hot 101, The Vindicator and UFCW Local 880.
