Flocking to the Great Backyard Bird Count

The Vindicator/William D. Lewis
Mahoning Valley residents took part in the national Great Backyard Bird Count at the Ford Nature Center in Mill Creek Park. The bird count invites birdwatchers and amateurs to collect data about their local winter birds. At top, a cardinal grabs a bite to eat at a feeder at the nature center. Above left, taking part in the program Sunday were, from left, Betty Ann Nagy and Katie Shipka, both of Youngstown, and Patrice Harvey, owner of Wild Birds Unlimited in Boardman. They are looking at birds attracted to the feeders. At right, among the birds spotted at Mill Creek Park is a downy woodpecker. The bird count started Friday and continues through today.
