Snowbound interstate highways reopen
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Three interstate highways in eastern Pennsylvania reopened this afternoon after crews cleared them of ice and snow following a storm that left hundreds of motorists stranded, the governor’s office said.
Speed limits on I-78, I-80 and I-81 were temporarily reduced to 45 mph pending a determination by state police that it was safe to return to the regularly posted speed limits.
Vehicles started getting stuck on I-78 around midday Wednesday. But because of what Gov. Ed Rendell called an “almost total breakdown in communication” among state agencies, it took more than a day for state police to close all of the entrance ramps. All motorists had been cleared off the highways by early Friday.
