Emmalee Wince and Katie Libb recently were named winners in the South Range Middle School Agricultural Science Fair Project category. In the seventh-grade competition, Katie's research project was "Water Drainage from Different Types of Soil." Emmalee, an eighth-grader, did her project on "Egg Production -- Which is Better: Red or White Light?" Each pupil won a 100 U.S. Savings Bond from Mahoning County Farm Bureau Advisory Councils of Green & amp; Beaver Townships. There were 34 entries in the agricultural category and each participant received an Earth Day T-shirt. Students will compete at the Youngstown State University Science Fair.
Information sessions
GIRARD -- St. Rose School, 61 E. Main St., will hold information sessions at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday for parents interested in sending their children to the school. For information, call (330) 545-1163 or e-mail ksauline@netscape.com. Financial aid is available.
The school recently held a "dress-down day" and collected 200 that was donated to St. Rose Relay for Life Team.
Showing off new school
NEWTON FALLS -- Newton Falls schools will hold an open house from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday to show the public their newest building -- Newton Falls Elementary School. The 65,000-square-foot building at 909 Milton Blvd. will house pupils in grades K-2 and boasts state-of-the-art computer labs, library and other facilities. The building replaces the Arlington Elementary School.
Credit counseling offered
GIRARD -- Melanie Mayesky, community/family liaison for Girard City Schools' 21st Century Community Learning Center, has scheduled a Consumer Credit Counseling program for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Multi-Generational Center, 443 Trumbull Ave. The free one-hour session is for anyone dealing with financial problems and to help them avoid borrowing and credit-card mistakes. Child care and refreshments will be available.
Open enrollment policy
LOWELLVILLE -- The Lowellville school district will continue its inter-district open enrollment policy for the 2007-08 school year, but only for kindergarten and grades four, seven and eight. Applications will be available at the district's main office, 52 Rocket Place, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 1 and from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 3.
Taking applications
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown Community School, 50 Essex St., will accept applications for new pupils for the 2007-08 school year next week. Applications will be available from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and from 7:30 a.m. to noon Friday. Current pupils will reapply the week of Feb. 26. All pupils must live in Youngstown and those applying for kindergarten must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 30.
Tutor training classes
CANFIELD -- Mahoning County Career & amp; Technical Center's Adult Basic and Literacy Education program will hold tutor training classes March 8, 15, 22 and 29 at the Big Reach Center of Hope, 11767 Lisbon Road, Greenford. All sessions will run from 6-9 p.m. Anyone interested in tutoring adults is invited to participate. To register, call the center at (330) 729-4100.
Theater internship
WARREN -- Kent Trumbull Theatre is looking for high school students interested in its annual High School Internship in Technical Theatre program. The internship includes training in scenery, scene painting, properties, lighting, sound and costuming. Interns must be willing to spend 15 hours a week in the eight-week program and help crew a show. At the end of the summer, successful interns will get a 500 stipend. Eagle Heights Academy
YOUNGSTOWN -- Eagle Heights Academy is accepting open enrollment applications for the 2007-08 school year for grades K-8. Parents must apply in person. Their children need not attend. Applications may be picked up at the school at 1833 Market St. and can be returned between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily as well as from 3-6 p.m. March 9 and 9 a.m. to noon March 24.
Science competition
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- About 500 young scientists in grades seven-12 will participate in the Region IX meeting of the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science competition Feb. 24 in the University Union at Slippery Rock University. The region includes Mercer, Lawrence, Butler, Beaver, Armstrong, Clarion, Indiana and Jefferson counties. Two four-year scholarships will be awarded to the top senior and junior who choose to attend Slippery Rock. There are various cash prizes as well. The event will run from 12:45 p.m. until the awards ceremony at 6 p.m.
