Boardman's relays headed to state
Canfield also had two relay teams qualify for next week's state meet.
CLEVELAND -- Boardman's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Mike Barringer, Brian Worhatch, Kenny Drombosky and Conner O'Halloran broke the school record with a time of 1:27.74 to finish second at Saturday's district meet at Cleveland State, earning a spot in next week's state meet in Canton.
"We're real happy with that time," said Boardman coach Terry O'Halloran, who noted that the time qualifies the Spartans for All-America consideration. "We swam very fast.
The previous record was 1:28.11, set in 2000. The four Spartans also qualified for the state meet in the 200 medley relay Friday.
O'Halloran's split time of 21.0 seconds was the fastest recorded by any swimmer over the weekend.
"I think it's one of the best district meets we've had on the boys side," Terry O'Halloran said. "We're still hoping to swim faster."
Canfield's 200 free relay team of James Hunter, Jordan Graham, Ryan King and Eric Davis finished third with a time of 1:28.14. The top four in each event advanced.
Broke school record
The Cardinals also broke their school record by three seconds in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:13.83 to finish third. Canfield placed 13th in the event at last year's state meet.
"They're motivated; they've been motivated since last year at state," said Canfield coach Andrea Linnelli. "They work really hard."
Hunter, Graham, Davis and Garrett Trebilcock were members of the relay. Trebilcock, a freshman, also qualified in the 200 IM Friday.
Lisbon's Ben Haren finished fourth in the 100 backstroke.
Several other swimmers, including O'Halloran (who placed sixth in the 100 free), Davis (seventh in the 100 free), King (seventh in the 100 back) and Barringer (seventh in 100 breast) can still earn at-large bids based on times across the state.
"We're almost positive that Eric Davis will make it to state," Linnelli said. "We're real excited about this weekend and it's great to see the kids advancing on. They're great kids and they're motivated and they work hard and you want to see good things happen for those kind of kids."
Mooney junior advances
In girls competition, Mooney junior Morgan McCarty placed second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.76 to qualify for the state meet. The top three in Div. II earned automatic bids.
Next week's state meet is at C.T. Branin Natatorium at Canton McKinley High School. The diving competition is Thursday, followed by swimming competition Friday and Saturday.
