Pa. accident injures deputies, two others

NEW CASTLE — Two Lawrence County deputy sheriffs were injured in an afternoon accident that sent two other people to area hospitals.

The accident happened at 3:37 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. Route 422 and Harbor Edinburg Road when a 1992 Cadillac attempting to make a left turn collided with the sheriff’s cruiser, say reports from the Pennsylvania State Police.

Deputies Joseph Mangino, 26, of New Castle, and David McBride, 24, of New Castle, were treated at Jameson Memorial Hospital.

The driver and one passenger of the Cadillac also were treated at area hospitals for their injuries. Michelle Rakoci, 20, of New Castle, the driver, was treated at Jameson Memorial, and Vincent Austin, 28, of New Castle, was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown.

A one-year-old girl, who also was traveling in the Cadillac, was not injured. The name of the girl was not released. State police said they plan to file a traffic citation against Rakoci for failure to yield.
