Damage Claims Insurance tips

Ohio Department of Insurance director Mary Jo Hudson is offering advice to consumers who plan to file claims to insurance companies for damage caused by the recent severe winter weather:
Try to protect your property and salvage what you can. Use common sense to prevent additional damage, without endangering yourself.
Closely inspect property and cars for damage. Note and photograph any damage and losses. This will assist in settling claims.
Know your coverage limits and your deductible. Remember that if you call your insurance company and identify yourself as having a claim, and later do not file a claim because your loss was below or at the deductible amount, you have in fact filed a claim that is recorded as unpaid and could lead to higher premium rates in the future.
Be sure that your agent knows how to contact you if you cannot stay in your home.
If required to seek temporary housing, check your policy for "loss of use" coverage. Many policies cover such expenses up to a stated amount.
Be sure that everything is included in the claim. Back up claims with written estimates.
