Warren workers on job; most Trumbull County workers off

WARREN — Remarks from Gov. Ted Strickland urging Ohioans to limit travel and the distance of travel prompted Trumbull County commissioners to close most county buildings today, but Warren city workers were on the job.

Commissioner Paul Heltzel said he and his colleagues decided early today to close the courthouse and most of the other county buildings. Most personnel at the sheriff’s department and the county jail, workers clearing the roads at the county engineer’s office, and county 911 and maintenance workers did report for work, he said.

Heltzel noted that an employee was assigned to staff the clerk of courts office in the courthouse so that anyone having a filing deadline today could file legal documents. A small security staff is also on hand at the courthouse, he noted.

The county commissioners meeting that had been planned for today has been postponed until Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the commissioners meeting room.

Warren city employees, however, were at work today, Service Director Doug Franklin said, adding that there were some who couldn’t make it in.

Franklin said plowing crews had been working through the night and had made the main streets “manageable.” Crews were plowing them a second time at around 9 a.m.

The next goal would be to clear secondary roads such as Larchmont Avenue and Niles Road, then residential streets, he said.

It was helpful that most people heeded orders not to park on streets, Franklin said. The on-street parking ban continues today.
