Submit information on services for Lent
The Vindicator will run a listing of area services that are open to the public in observance of Ash Wednesday, Feb. 21. Other information on Lenten programs may be included. The deadline to submit information is 5 p.m. Wednesday. The list will be published Feb. 17.
On Hinduism, Islam
CANFIELD -- Sister Nancy Dawson, executive director of the Ursuline Center and adjunct professor of world religions at Youngstown State University, will present the program, "A Lenten Global Response, Hinduism and Islamic Faiths," during sessions planned Feb. 20 and 27 and March 6. Hinduism will be discussed from 10:30 a.m. to noon and Islam, 1 to 2:30 p.m. Each session will address a different topic. For reservations, call (330) 799-4941. A donation of 5 is requested.
Spiritual growth campaign
GIRARD -- Girard First United Methodist Church, 22 N. Market St., will begin a new spiritual growth campaign based on Max Lucado's book "Come Thirsty." The kickoff service will be at the 10:45 a.m. worship service Feb. 18. During the campaign, the Rev. Doug Meek, pastor, will speak on the four important ways God refreshes thirsty hearts. All adults are encouraged to read Lucado's book, which may be ordered through the church at a discounted price. New small group Bible study sessions are planned at 5:30 p.m. Sundays and 7 p.m. Tuesdays. For more information, call the church at (330) 545-4361.
Speaker at parish mission
AUSTINTOWN -- Mark Nehrbas, a Catholic evangelist and executive director of Christian outreach at Franciscan University of Steubenville, will speak at 7 p.m. Sunday through Tuesday at St. Joseph Church, 4545 New Road. The speaker is part of the first Aflame parish mission, an effort to enhance the Catholic identity of church members.
Heritage Day planned
AUSTINTOWN -- Austintown Community Church, 242 S. Canfield-Niles Road, will mark Heritage Day during services at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Feb. 18. Members of 50 years and longer will be honored. Members are encouraged to wear clothing of the 1950s, and photos from that time period will be displayed in the atrium. Mary Caroline Swinehart deVille will give a sermon that her late father and church pastor, the Rev. Arthur Swinehart, had delivered. Refreshments will be served.
Flame Fellowship
BOARDMAN -- Greater Youngstown Chapter of Flame Fellowship International will meet Feb. 19 at the Georgeanna Parker Activity Center in Boardman Township Park. Fellowship is at 11:30 a.m. and the ministry at noon. Guest speaker will be Leslie N. Pegues, an associate minister at Christian Revival and Discipleship Center.
Healing clinic planned
CANFIELD -- Lifecare Ministry Center, Lucille Orr Ministries Inc., 5357 Raccoon Road, will hold a training session for a healing clinic. The session will be from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 24 at the center. Registration is requested by Friday by calling the office at (330) 503-1111. The healing clinic is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon March 10 and will be open the second and fourth Saturdays of the month.
Campus crusade
CHAMPION -- Kent State University Trumbull Campus will hold a free Rebel With a Cause concert at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 28 in the lower commons area of the classroom/administration building. Indy United and Shudder will perform. Campus Crusade for Christ, a student organization, will provide free food and sponsor a drawing.
For spiritual directors
VILLA MARIA, Pa. -- Villa Maria Spirituality and Education Center will offer a "Spiritual Director's Professional Day: How Does the Contemplative Heart Listen?" from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. March 2 at its conference center. Presenters will be Maria Beesing and Ann Walters, both certified spiritual directors and co-directors for the U.S. Collaborative Dominican Novitiate for women. The program will focus on exploring the principles and skills of empathic listening. The process will involve presentation, small group discussion, reflection and role playing.
