Boardman girls fall to Oak Ridge (Tenn.), 47-43


The Spartans had the lead against the unbeaten team, but couldn’t hold it.

PICKERINGTON — The Boardman High girls basketball team had a 33-31 lead entering the final quarter, but the Spartans were unable to maintain the upper hand and fell to previously-undefeated Oak Ridge (Tenn.), 47-43, in the Pickerington North Tournament Friday.

Boardman was hurt when Courtney Schiffauer, who scored a game-high 23 points, fouled out with about 3:30 left.

Kortni Jones scored seven of her team-high 16 points in the final period to help Oak Ridge (12-0) make a comeback, while her team made 4-for-8 at the foul line over that span, to remain undefeated.

Kierra Johnson added nine points for Oak Ridge.

Darryce Moore scored 17 points to aid Boardman (6-3).

The Spartans will play again today at 3 p.m. against the winner of the Lakota West-Archbishop Wood game played Friday.

Howland 61, South Park 39

NORTH ALLEGHENY, Pa. — Alexa Williams had 18 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, four steals and three blocked shots to lead Howland in the consolation game of the North Allegheny Holiday Classic.

Megan Long and Kelly Barzak chipped in with 10 points apiece to aid Howland (8-2), Long getting six of her points in the Tigers’ 20-point third quarter that gave them a 49-26 lead.

Beth Beleichak had 14 points and Nicole Doria 12 points to lead South Park (6-2).

Niles 47, Girard 35

GIRARD — Megan McDermott scored nine points and Allie Moss added eight to lead Niles (5-4).

Amanda Binion had seven points and seven rebounds for the Red Dragons, who led 22-13 at halftime.

Emily Smerchansky led Girard (1-9) with 13 points, while Katelynne Brainard added nine points and 10 rebounds.

Liberty 49, Springfield 46

NEW MIDDLETOWN — Melissa Dykes and Cheyella Merriweather had 13 points apiece to lead Liberty.

The Leopards (6-4) trailed 32-27 entering the final quarter but outscored Springfield 22-13 over the final eight minutes.

Merriweather also had 10 rebounds and Dykes finished with eight assists.

Springfield (4-7) was led by Andria Lyons with 12 points. Ashley Davis added nine rebounds and four assists; Brittany Chamberlain had eight rebounds and Rachel Kennedy five blocks.
