Cooper reaches 1,000, but Mooney girls roll


The Youngstown Christian senior was playing in her first game this season.

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown Christian senior Kara Cooper managed to make school history Saturday despite a knee injury and Cardinal Mooney’s 75-35 victory at the Eagles’ gum.

Cooper, who suffered a torn ACL in a preseason all-star soccer game and didn’t play in any basketball games until Saturday, scored four points to give her 1,001 for her career. She became the first Youngstown Christian girl to reach 1,000 career points. She entered the season with 997 points.

Cooper will undergo ACL surgery soon, then plans to attend Youngstown State and play soccer for the Penguins.

Mooney got balanced scoring with five players in double-figure scoring to roll past Youngstown Christian.

Katie Hughes and Dominque Zordich each had 12 points to lead Mooney while Jessica Farragher, Edna Robinson and Sarah Pelini added 10 each, as the Cardinals made 34-for-52 from the field.

Kristi Cooper had 14 points to lead Youngstown Christian while Sara Bell had nine with six rebounds and three steals. Vickie Bankhead also had three steals.

Niles 40, Poland 30

POLAND — Niles, behind 23-19 at halftime, outscored Poland 10-2 in the third quarter in the Metro Athletic Conference contest.

Nina Gabrelcik scored a game high 23 points to spark the Red Dragons. Missy Haug led the Bulldogs with 13 points.

Hubbard 51, Liberty 40

HUBBARD — Paige Seech scored seven of her nine points in the fourth quarter, giving Hubbard a boost off the bench in a come-from-behind Trumbull Athletic Conference victory.

The Eagles (5-5, 3-1) outscored Liberty 26-8 in the final period to pull away, making 13 of 16 from the line over the final eight minutes.

Cara Julian led Hubbard with 17 points, six assists and five rebounds, while Brittany Bullock added 10.

Brittany Armour had 14 points and Melissa Dykes added 12 for Liberty (5-4, 2-2).

Jefferson Area 62, Lakeview 22

CORTLAND — Jefferson rolled to a 33-9 lead by intermission and the Bulldogs (2-7) weren’t able to catch up.

Lizzy Ziemski paced Jefferson with 14 points. Callie Busch chipped in with 10. Jessica Down scored six points and pulled down eight rebounds for the Bulldogs. Mackenzi Palette also scored six points.

Sebring 49, Lake Christian 27

SEBRING — The Trojans (4-3) were in command 33-18 heading into the final eight minutes of action.

Megan Allcorn sparked Sebring with 12 points. Jill Bragg chipped in with 11. Julie McCune paced Lake Christian with eight points.

West Branch 45, Alliance 37

ALLIANCE — Emilee Zets and Amanda Stiffler each had 15 points and six rebounds to lead the Warriors (5-5, 5-2) in a Northeastern Buckeye Conference game.

Lordstown 43, Badger 25

LORDSTOWN — The Red Devils’ (6-3, 2-2) defensive limited Badger to eight points in the first quarter, six in the second and nine in the third in building a 37-23 lead.

Brianna Blodgett sparked Lordstown with 10 points. Lindsey Harrison added seven, while Kelsey Wickline, Karly Gibbs, Heather Wickline and Keeley Chaffee each had six. Gibbs grabbed nine of 34 rebounds and she had three assists.

Commodore Perry 22

HERMITAGE, Pa. — The Eagles (1-6), in snapping a six-game losing streak, rushed out to a 12-2 lead in the first quarter and they increased that margin to 28-9 by intermission.

Caitlin Lenhart sparked Kennedy Catholic with 23 points. Ashley Kirkpatrick added 10 and she pulled down 17 rebounds and had 12 assists. Brittany Charsar had four steals.

WARREN — Paige Kleric scored 11 points to lead JFK in a losing effort Friday.

Boys

Chaney 99, Beaver Local 85, OT

YOUNGSTOWN — James Burns scored 10 of his game-high 30 points in overtime as Chaney rallied to defeat Beaver Local 99-85 in boys basketball action Saturday night.

The Cowboys (1-5) finished with six players in double figures as Alan Burns added 16, Mike Parker 14, Isaiah Sason 13, Dearis Howell 11 and Tyray Herns 10.

Beaver Local (1-5) was led by Zack Zelinsky who finished with 29 points and made a basket in the final seconds to send the game into overtime. Ethan Russell also had 28 points for Beaver Local.

Lakeview 58, South Range 51

NORTH LIMA — Lakeview, behind 28-26 at intermission, outscored South Range (2-8) 12-8 in the third quarter, then put the non-league game away in the final eight minutes for the victory.

John Kittle sparked the Bulldogs with 14 points. Robert Franks and Jared Clark added 10 points apiece. Travis Wisler led the Raiders with 16 points and he grabbed nine rebounds. Jack Dawson added 11 points.

Southern 48, Western Reserve 46

BERLIN CENTER — The Indians’ (6-3, 4-3) Ethan Blatch connected on a 35-foot shot at the buzzer for the victory in the Inter Tri-County Tier 2 game.

Tyler Baker sparked the Indians with 19 points. Blatch and Andrew Diaz added 18 and 10 respectively. Justin Lude sparked he Blue Devils (3-6, 2-5) with 18 points.
