Sheriff contest taking shape in Columbiana County

LISBON — A veteran law enforcement official has announced he will file today to run against his former boss.

Daniel N. “Skip” MacLean of Yellow Creek Township announced that he will run for Columbiana County sheriff as a Republican.

Sheriff David Smith has also filed to run for another term as a Republican. Smith is facing a first-degree misdemeanor charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence in Guernsey County. If he is convicted, the charge would bar him from serving as sheriff.

MacLean became a deputy in 1978, and later served as day shift commander, and jail administrator.

He retired in 2004 and has been serving as the chief of security as the county municipal court.

MacLean said the county Republican party is aware he is filing.

The party has planned to have a backup candidate in case Smith cannot serve.
