Poland teen shot dead in home

POLAND — An 18-year-old Poland Township woman was shot to death in her home about 5:50 a.m. on Saturday.

Poland Township police and the Mahoning County Coroner’s office are investigating.

Police said Marissa J. Plakosh was shot once.

The initial investigation indicates a family friend was visiting the 2819 Algonquin Drive residence.

While seated in the same room with the victim and her brother, the family friend was handling a loaded firearm. It discharged once, striking her in the neck.

The friend, a 20-year-old Poland Township man, was taken into custody and later released after posting a $10,000 bond, police said Saturday.

Police would not release his name, saying a charge of reckless homicide, a third degree felony, would be filed Monday with Struthers Prosecutor Carol Clemente Wagner. The suspect will make his initial appearance in Struthers court at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
