Area students receive L.U.N.A. scholarships

YOUNGSTOWN — Latinas United Networking Association Inc., a nonprofit agency designed to expand the horizons of Latin women and youths in Mahoning County and surrounding areas, has awarded $500 scholarships to:

•Vilmary Placeres, a daughter of Nelly Vega and Wilfredo Placeres. A graduate of Campbell Memorial High School, she will pursue a degree in prelaw at Youngstown State University.

•Alyssa Rojas, a daughter of the Rev. Rolando and Ruth Rojas. A graduate of Youngstown Christian School, she will major in psychology at Wellesley College in Massachusetts.

The deadline for Hispanic college students to apply for the 2007 L.U.N.A. scholarships is Sept. 30. The $500 book scholarships will be awarded at an annual wine taste and dinner fundraiser to be held from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Byzantine Center at the Grove, 3801 Shirley Run Road.
