Volleyball team
off to 4-0 start

PHILADELPHIA — For just the second time in school history and the first time since 1981, the YSU volleyball team has started a season 4-0 after holding off Temple in a five-game victory Saturday, 30- 27, 31-29, 19-30, 18-30, 15-8.

Senior Jessica Fraley led the Penguins with 13 kills and seven blocks while sophomore Ruth Boscaljon added 10 kills.

Freshman Abigail Drost had nine kills and 12 digs while sophomore Allison Heinz tallied eight kills and eight blocks. Junior setter Karla Everhart posted 30 assists, six kills and seven digs while classmate Ebony Barbosa added nine kills and a team-high 17 digs.

Earlier Saturday YSU swept Rider, 31-28, 30-19, 30-28.

Kaitlin O'Hara reached double figures with 10 kills and a .409 hitting percentage.

Volleyball schedule

YOUNGSTOWN — Cardinal Mooney High School’s volleyball team will play at East High Thursday and East will play at Mooney on Sept. 18.

League seek teams

YOUNGSTOWN —The Wednesday Night Bowlerettes League has room for two teams at West Side Lanes for the upcoming season.

Each team in the trio league has the option to carry a fourth bowler. Opening night is Sept. 5 and the last session is March 26.

Race set today

SALEM — The Quaker City Raceway's 50th Anniversary Race will run today.

The track will collect donations for the Second Harvest Food Bank in exchange for free general admission. For details call (330) 530-1227.

Sharon Speedway

HARTFORD — Heavy rain forced Sharon Speedway officials to cancel the USAC National Sprint Car series event Saturday.

The FANtastic Five racing will continue Sept. 1 for the championship finale.

Tickets for Saturday's action will be available at a price of $11 for adults (16 and older), $5 for kids (12-15) and free for children 11 and younger.

Horseshoe softball

YOUNGSTOWN — The Horseshoe Bar softball team won three championships this summer.

Horseshoe won the Delida Division League championship, the WRA Early Bird Tournament and the WRA regular season title. The team is coached Art Johnston.

Fair’s harness racing
program spiced up

CANFIELD — As the Canfield Fair approaches, fairboard member George Berlin and the Canfield Harness Horsemen’s Association are preparing for the harness racing scheduled Sept. 1 and Sept. 3 at noon at the Canfield Fairgrounds. Area residents who have been participating in ‘Walk Your Way to the Races’ are reminded that completed forms can be turned in Tuesday at the vendor’s windows at the fairgound office.

The first 12 forms turned in will receive a free pass to the fair for either Saturday or Monday, so the participant can attend the harness races.

JCC boxing coach

YOUNGSTOWN — Rocco Campanna will be bringing his boxing expertise and his motivating coaching skills to the Jewish Community Center as an instructor for a new fitness program called Boxing Body Sculpting.

More than just traditional boxing, every session features a comprehensive full body work-out, including warm-up, cardio and isometric exercises, and boxing training.

Scholarship plans

SALEM — The Salem Little Quakers Inc. is sponsoring its first fundraiser to establish a scholarship in memory of C. Elliott Dunlap who was a former coach and board member of the organization for over 25 years. A clambake-barbeque and night of music with jazz violinist Rodney McCoy of Pittsburgh will be held Sept. 15 at the Salem Saxon Club.

The scholarship to honor Dunlap will allow two deserving students, one male and one female to attend Youngstown State University.

Dunlap attended Youngstown State and graduated in 1975 with a B.A. in Business Administration where he was a four-year letterman and co-captain his junior and senior years for coach Rey Dempsey.

He was named Who’s Who in Outstanding College Athletes in 1974 and played in the All Ohio Shrine Bowl in 1975.

Looked at by pro scouts and interviewed by the Pittsburgh Steelers, he chose to return to Salem and work in the family business Dunlap Disposal Company.

Silver Stars beat
Monarchs, even series

SAN ANTONIO — Facing playoff elimination, the San Antonio Silver Stars looked to the one player that has carried them all season. And Becky Hammon delivered.

She had 20 points to lead the Silver Stars to their first playoff win in San Antonio, an 86-61 victory Saturday over the Sacramento Monarchs.

Hammon, who had 15 points in the first half, finished 7-of-11 from the field. She had four 3-pointers, four assists and three steals to help the Silver Stars even the Western Conference series.

“We wanted to come out, play hard and not get outhustled like we did in Game 1,” said Hammon, who was awarded the WNBA Peak Performer Assist Award before the game. “We wanted to come out, be aggressive and set the tone.”

Fever knock off Sun;
force game three

INDIANAPOLIS — Anna DeForge scored 26 points to help the Indiana Fever defeat the Connecticut Sun 78-59 Saturday and tie their first-round playoff series at one game apiece.

It was Indiana’s first win against the Sun in six tries this season. The Fever will host the decisive Game 3 on Monday night.

Tamika Catchings added 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Fever in her second game back from a left foot injury that sidelined her for 13 games.
