for injured student

YOUNGSTOWN — The condition of a Poland Seminary High School band member injured last week has been upgraded. Mark DeMartino, 18, was listed in satisfactory condition Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Health Center, upgraded from critical condition earlier this week. DeMartino suffered a fractured skull last week when the lid of a chewing tobacco can flung more than 200 feet by a riding lawn mower struck him in the head. DeMartino, a senior, was emerging along with other band members from the high school building the morning of Aug. 16 just as the mower rider, a summer employee of the school district, was finishing mowing.

Youngstown man
held in Portage Co.

YOUNGSTOWN — A 27-year-old Youngstown man released from the Mahoning County Jail about a week ago is in police custody in Portage County on a felony charge of receiving stolen property. Brimfield Township police say Nicholas J. Boerio was spotted in a stolen car Wednesday entering a Wal-Mart. Police charged him inside the store where officers said he was using a stolen credit card. Brimfield police say Boerio had other stolen credit cards in his possession when he was arrested. Other charges by Brimfield police are pending. Boerio was being held in the Mahoning jail until overcrowding there led to his release Aug. 13, according to the sheriff’s department. Boerio was in jail on charges from Boardman police of receiving stolen property, misuse of a credit card and identity fraud.

Closed for culvert work

LAKE MILTON — State Route 534 between U.S. Route 224 and Mahoning Avenue in Milton Township is closed through early September for culvert repairs. The detour is Route 224 to state Route 45 to Mahoning Avenue, the Ohio Department of Transportation said.

Meeting about geese

STRUTHERS — Ohio Department of Wildlife officials will be on hand at 6 p.m. today for a local board of health meeting exploring the city’s growing goose problem. Struthers environmental health director Lori Diorio said she organized the meeting in response to residents’ complaints of Canada geese overpopulation problems in the city, particularly near Lake Hamilton. The meeting will be at the multipurpose center at Mauthe Park, 156 Smithfield St.

OVI checkpoint

WARREN — The Trumbull Operating a Vehicle Impaired Task Force will operate an OVI checkpoint to deter and intercept impaired drivers from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. today on Parkman Road. The checkpoint is part of the nationwide crack down on impaired driving, which runs from Aug. 17 to Sept. 3. Task force funding is provided by a grant through the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Governors Highway Safety Office.

Reopening for free lunch

YOUNGSTOWN — The St. Vincent de Paul Society’s dining hall, 208 W. Front St., will reopen to visitors Monday after a three-week construction hiatus. Structural damage to the building’s exterior caused the temporary closure of the facility that serves about 315 free lunches per day, said Fred Pisani, president of the society’s Youngstown Council.

Center closed during fair

CANFIELD —The Green Team's recycling center at the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm on state Route 46 in Canfield will be closed from Aug. 27 to Sept. 5. The Canfield Fair uses this parking lot to park large trucks and equipment.

Canfield Band Night

CANFIELD — Canfield’s 34th annual Band Night is set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the high school stadium. Schools scheduled to participate are Canfield, Austintown, Boardman, Poland, Struthers, West Branch and Mount Union College.
