About Cardinal Mooney
Background on the first Youngstown priest who became a cardinal, and whose name was given to Cardinal Mooney High School on Youngstown's South Side. The school marked its 50th anniversary Sunday.
1882: Edward Aloysius Cardinal Mooney was born in Maryland, and his family moved to Youngstown when he was young.
1909: Ordained a Roman Catholic priest in the Diocese of Cleveland.
1926: Named a bishop. Serves as bishop of Rochester, N.Y., from 1933 to 1937.
1937: Serves as archbishop of Detroit.
1946: Named a cardinal and was also named as the cardinal-priest of Santa Susanna, the home of the American Catholic Church in Rome.
1958: Dies in Rome.
