Two men 'critical' after shooting, stabbing

Sunday, April 29, 2007

YOUNGSTOWN — Two men were reported in critical condition Sunday evening at St. Elizabeth Medical Center after separate attacks earlier in the day.

Police said that Arvellar Davis Jr., 28, of Sunshine Avenue, was shot in the head as he drove away from Jitso’s Place, 2023 McGuffey Road, about 2:08 a.m.

Police said two men apparently jumped from Davis’ vehicle when shots were fired through the rear window. A man in the vehicle drove to safety before calling for help for Davis.

Benjamin Chaibi, 21, of Campbell, was also in critical condition. His throat had been cut, and he had a puncture wound in his right shoulder, cuts below and behind his right ear, and was cut on his left hand.

Antonio Morales, 18, of Leffingwell Road, Berlin Center, was charged with felonious assault in the attack on Chaibi about 3:31 a.m. at a house at 2536 Ohio Ave., police said.

Police said that Chaibi and Morales had been arguing over an undisclosed matter and that a relative of Chaibi’s had sent them to different rooms.

The argument broke out again and police were called. They found the victim outside the house, holding a towel against his throat.

One man told police he had seen Morales playing with a knife before the fight.

Morales was taken into custody at a home on LaSalle Avenue. Police said they saw a knife being tossed out a window and confiscated it but could not tell who threw it.
