DAMASCUS -- Police stopped 877 vehicles in four western Mahoning County checkpoints Friday evening, arresting one person on a drunken-driving charge and issuing 33 citations for nonuse of seat belts and five citations for lack of child restraints.
The checkpoints in Goshen and Smith townships were operated by officers from the Mahoning County OVI (operating a vehicle impaired) Task Force.
Police also seized three vehicles and made three arrests for driving under license suspension and four misdemeanor arrests, including one for having an open alcoholic beverage container.
Free night at museum
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Children's Museum of the Valley, 139 E. Boardman St., will have its monthly admission-free Community Night program from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Miss D and Joni will engage families in singing art projects at 5:30, 6:15 and 7 p.m.
Exhibits at the museum include the Solomon Art Center, "Over the River and Through the Woods" for children up to age 3, Global Grocery and the WFMJ News Studio.
The program allows families the opportunity to explore the museum's exhibits while providing enriching educational experiences. Community Night is sponsored by First Place Foundation.

Wilson, Ryan to speak
SALEM -- U.S. Reps. Charles A. Wilson Jr., of St. Clairsville, D-6th, and Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, will speak next Sunday at the Salem Democrat of the Year Dinner at Timberlanes. A social hour is at 5 p.m. and dinner is at 6 p.m.
This is the first time in the history of the dinner and the Columbiana County Democrats that two sitting congressmen have spoken at the dinner.
Ryan sits on the House Appropriations Committee, which oversees and votes on House appropriations bills. Wilson was appointed to the Science and Technology committee, and also sits on the House Financial Services committee.

School Bus Road-E-O
CHAMPION -- The Northeast "A" Regional School Bus Road-E-O will be Saturday at the Trumbull County Career and Technical Center on state Route 45. The event is open to any certified school bus driver in Ashtabula, Trumbull and Mahoning counties.
Drivers will vie for a chance to enter the state competition, with a chance to continue on to the national competition. Competition starts near 9:30 a.m. and continues to about 2:30 p.m. For more information, contact your local school bus transportation supervisor or on-board instructor. Entry deadline is Thursday.
Trustees' meeting time
AUSTINTOWN -- Trustees have changed the time for their twice-monthly meetings. Meetings will take place at 6 p.m. at the township building on Ohltown Road the second and fourth Mondays of every month. The last meeting in May will be Tuesday at 6 p.m. because of Memorial Day.
