Haug leads Mooney girls; Ursuline's Brown is MVP

St. Thomas Aquinas captures the boys title in the Diocesan track meet.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Gretchen Haug took first place in the discus (122 feet, 11 inches) and second in the shot put, leading Cardinal Mooney High to the girls title with 93 points in the Diocesan championships Friday at Youngstown State. She was named field events MVP.
Jasmine Brown of Ursuline was named track events MVP. She won the 100 meters in a meet record 12.6 seconds and the 200 (26.0).
St. Thomas Aquinas captured the boys team championship with 110 points. Mooney was second with 92.
Wes Washington of Ursuline took first place in the 110 hurdles (15.8) and 300 hurdles (41.6).
St. Thomas' Adam Grimm was named field events MVP and Canton Central Catholic's Evan Heck track events MVP. Grimm won the high jump (6-2) and long jump (20-61/2), while Heck took the 1600 (4:39.6) and 800 (2:04.7).
Boardman third at Bedford
BEDFORD -- Boardman's Carrie Mavrikis, Ashley Frazzini and Lea Byers placed first as they set a school record in the pole vault relay Saturday at the Bedford Relays.
Their height of 17-0 broke the old mark of 15-6 held by Carrie Mavrikis and Jenna Agnew in 2005.
Wadsworth took the team title with 113. Cleveland Collinwood was second with 851/2 and Boardman third with 74.
Kim Haug, Lydnsie Hall and Maria Lonardo of the Spartans were second in the shot put relay (95-1). Haug, Lonardo and Erin Brown were third in the discus (282-11). Nicole Biagetti, Samara Sutton and Brande Ellington were third in the long jump (44-21/2).
Lauren Agnew of the Spartans placed second in the 1600 (5:22.5) and 800 (2:21.5).
