Twins 5, Tigers 3
DETROIT -- Pinch-hitter Joe Mauer's two-run single capped a four-run eighth inning for Minnesota. With the bases loaded and two outs, Mauer lined a Joel Zumaya (0-1) pitch into shallow center to give the Twins their first lead of the game. The Tigers got two singles off Juan Rincon with one out in the eighth, but rookie Mike Rabelo grounded out and Brandon Inge struck out. Rabelo is now 0-for-12 for Detroit, and Inge is hitting .129. Jesse Crain (1-1), the second of four Twins pitchers, picked up the win after allowing one run in an inning. Joe Nathan pitched a perfect ninth for his seventh save. Nate Robertson allowed three runs and five hits in seven-plus innings for the Tigers, who led 2-0 after six innings. Justin Morneau homered for the Twins on the first pitch of the seventh.
Rangers 5, Blue Jays 3
TORONTO -- Sammy Sosa hit his 595th career home run, and Mark Teixeira and Brad Wilkerson both had two-run shots for Texas. Sosa followed Teixeira's two-run drive in the third with a shot to center against Blue Jays starter Josh Towers (1-3). Robinson Tejada (3-1) gave up three runs and five hits in 51/-3 innings for Texas. Lyle Overbay and Adam Lind homered for the Blue Jays.
Red Sox 11, Yankees 4
NEW YORK -- Daisuke Matsuzaka overcame control problems to defeat the Yankees for the second time in six days, and Kevin Youkilis and Julio Lugo homered for Boston. Andy Pettitte (1-1) allowed five runs, six hits and five walks in 42/3 innings. Matsuzaka (3-2) gave up four runs and five hits in six innings, striking out seven in his first appearance at Yankee Stadium.
White Sox 7, Angels 3
CHICAGO -- Jermaine Dye homered twice for the White Sox, and Darin Erstad hit a go-ahead double against his former team. Jose Contreras allowed three runs in 61/3 innings. He gave up seven hits but got help from his defense with three double plays.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Nationals 4, Mets 3
WASHINGTON -- First things first: The Washington Nationals actually scored in the first inning, the only time they've managed to do that all season. Austin Kearns hit a three-run homer to stake Washington to an early lead and Matt Chico earned his second major league victory.
Phillies 6, Marlins 5
PHILADELPHIA -- Tom Gordon blew another save for Philadelphia. This time, the offense bailed him out. Carlos Ruiz's infield single with the bases loaded in the ninth gave the Phillies the victory over Florida. Philadelphia (10-12) has won six of seven after a terrible start. Jimmy Rollins' NL-leading ninth homer tied it and Chase Utley connected one batter later to give the Phillies a 5-4 lead in the eighth.
Cubs 5, Cardinals 3
ST. LOUIS -- Jason Marquis beat his old team for the second straight time and Felix Pie hit his first career home run for Chicago. Pie and Aramis Ramirez hit two-run homers in the fourth inning for the Cubs, who have won consecutive games for the first time since April 6-7. Left fielder Alfonso Soriano threw out two runners, one at the plate, and was 1-for-5 with two strikeouts.
Brewers 4, Astros 1
HOUSTON -- J.J. Hardy's two-run double off Roy Oswalt capped a three-run seventh inning for Milwaukee. Johnny Estrada homered in the eighth off new Astros reliever Stephen Randolph, helping the Brewers win for the seventh time in nine games. Chris Capuano (4-0) won his fourth straight start, giving up five hits and one run. Carlos Lee had an RBI single for the Astros, who last lost seven in a row in May 2005. Houston was playing its first home game since April 17.
