AMERICAN LEAGUE Tribe files protest in 7-4 loss to O's
The Indians' winning streak was snapped at six games.
CLEVELAND (AP) -- A bizarre set of circumstances in Baltimore's 7-4 victory over Cleveland on Saturday night led to a run that was waved off in the third inning being added later to the Orioles' total three innings later.
Baltimore was leading 2-1 in the top of the third with Nick Markakis on third base and Miguel Tejada on first and one out. Ramon Hernandez then hit a line drive to center field and Grady Sizemore made a diving catch. Markakis tagged up and headed for home. Tejada was around second when the ball was caught and was thrown out trying to get back to first.
It appeared Markakis crossed the plate well before Tejada was called out at first, but plate umpire Marvin Hudson waved off the run.
The umpiring crew conferred separately with Baltimore manager Sam Perlozzo and Cleveland manager Eric Wedge twice after the top of the third. After the Indians scored a run in the fifth to tie it at 2, it was announced in the bottom of the sixth that the Orioles' run in the third counted, giving Baltimore a 3-2 lead. The Indians then announced they were playing the game under protest.
Tribe streak snapped
Corey Patterson hit a two-run double in the eighth inning to help the Orioles snap a five-game losing streak and end the Indians' winning streak at six.
The Indians took a 4-3 lead in the sixth on Jhonny Peralta's two-run homer, but Baltimore scored twice in the eighth. Tejada started the rally with a single off Fernando Cabrera (1-1). Jay Payton singled with one out before a groundout moved the runners to second and third. Patterson doubled to right on an 0-2 pitch from Aaron Fultz.
Hernandez added a two-run double in the ninth off Roberto Hernandez.
Jamie Walker (1-0) pitched one-third of an inning for the win. Chris Ray worked the ninth for his seventh save.
The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the first on Hernandez's single. Tejada added an RBI single in the third.
Victor Martinez drove in Cleveland's first run with a single in the first. Casey Blake tied it in the fifth with a double.
