YOUNGSTOWN -- The AFL-CIO's political committee and a group that wants to combine the voting power of minorities and the faith-based community have issued Youngstown City Council endorsements.
The endorsements are for the May 8 Democratic primary.
The Mahoning/Trumbull Labor Council AFL-CIO's Mahoning Committee on Political Education endorsed:
Mike Write in the 1st Ward.
DeMaine Kitchen in the 2nd Ward.
Jamael Tito Brown in the 3rd Ward.
Councilwoman Carol Rimedio-Righetti in the 4th Ward.
John Palermo in the 5th Ward.
Councilman Paul Pancoe in the 6th Ward.
Councilman Mark S. Memmer in the 7th Ward.
The Citizens for Public Service's endorsements are:
Write and Annie Gillam in the 1st Ward.
Kitchen in the 2nd Ward.
Paul Drennen in the 5th Ward.
Memmer in the 7th Ward.
The organization didn't endorse in the 3rd and 4th Wards because the candidates in those primaries are uncontested, said the Rev. Jay Alford, its co-chairman.
It didn't endorse either candidate -- Pancoe or Janet Tarpley -- in the 6th Ward because they didn't meet the group's criteria to get the endorsement, the Rev. Mr. Alford said. Both candidates in the 1st Ward met the group's criteria and received a joint endorsement, he added.
The AFL-CIO and Citizens for Public Service also endorsed the passage of the county's 0.5 percent sales and use tax for a continuous period of time.
