Father, son charged
CORTLAND -- A father and his teenage son are now charged with the theft of eight handguns. Adam Zienkiewicz, 18, of Warren-Meadville Road, Bazetta, was charged Monday with receiving stolen property. His father, Walter Zienkiewicz, 48, of Johnson-Plank Road, Bazetta, appeared Monday in Trumbull County Central District Court on a charge of receiving stolen property. The father was released on a 10,000 personal recognizance bond, while his son may be arraigned Wednesday. Adam Zienkiewicz, city police said, is alleged to have stolen six of eight guns that were taken during an April 13 break-in at the Cortland home of a firearms collector. He gave them to his father, who is accused of fencing three of them, authorities say. The father had three of the guns when his home was searched. Police have recovered all the firearms.
Raise request dropped
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lawrence County Treasurer Ron Patrick has rescinded his request to give his chief deputy a 4,000 pay raise. Patrick said Tuesday there was a lack of support from the county salary board to give the pay increase to Cathy Toscano, who is now paid 39,561 annually. Patrick, who was appointed treasurer by Gov. Ed Rendell, took office earlier this month and fired second deputy Gloria Conti. He then asked that Toscano's salary be increased by the county salary board. The board includes the three county commissioners, county controller and the elected official whose office is affected. Toscano had been acting treasurer since August when the elected treasurer, Gary Felasco, was sent to state prison for theft. She had been earning about 49,000 per year as acting treasurer.
Addition to sentence
LISBON -- A man recently convicted of killing a woman was sentenced to one year in prison for taking part in a disturbance at the Columbiana County Jail. Andrew G. Irwin, 25, of East Liverpool, pleaded guilty Monday to a felony charge of vandalism. He and other prisoners fought with guards at the jail Oct. 6, 2006, over the quality of jail food. Irwin was convicted of murder in March in the stabbing death of Emily Foreman, 21, in Liverpool Township, last August. The new sentence will run concurrently with his murder sentence of 15 years to life. Irwin's lawyers will argue for a new trial on the murder charge. They claim another man confessed that he killed Foreman.
