Crash kills local man
AUSTINTOWN -- Township police and the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating a crash Sunday morning that killed a 22-year-old Austintown man.
According to police reports, the man was driving a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am east on New Road just east of the state Route 11 overpass at 5:22 a.m. when the fatal accident occurred. Officials said they believe the man's car hit a guardrail. His name is not being released, pending the notification of his family.
Investigating trailer fire
WEATHERSFIELD -- Fire officials are investigating a Saturday night fire that destroyed a township man's mobile home.
By the time Weathersfield firefighters responded to the blaze at the Suburban Mobile Home Park on Ninth Street around 9 p.m., the trailer was fully engulfed in flames, Fire Chief Randy Pugh said. The cause and a financial estimate for the damage are still undetermined, Pugh said.
The man who owned the trailer, whose name was not released by authorities, was treated and released from Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital for smoke inhalation. The man was at a neighbor's home when the fire began, but when he tried to enter the trailer to retrieve his belongings he inhaled smoke, Pugh said.
'Hooked On Books'
YOUNGSTOWN -- Taft Elementary School will have "Hooked On Books," a family literacy program from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday. The program will feature nine reading and writing stations for children and their parents.
Meeting of the Greens
YOUNGSTOWN -- The next meeting of the Mahoning Valley Greens will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Casa Ramirez Mexican Restaurant, 1578 Mahoning Ave. The agenda includes discussing issues relevant to the 10 key values of the national Green Party platform.
Car stolen at YSU
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University and city police arrested a man in the carjacking of a student's vehicle Sunday night.
According to police reports, the female student was walking to her car at University Courtyard Apartments at Walnut Street and Carlton Avenue around 10:30 p.m. when a male and female approached her and took her keys at gunpoint.
The suspects then led police on a high-speed chase until officers caught up with them at Kimmel Avenue and Albert Street.
Police arrested the male suspect, but they were still looking for the female suspect at 11 p.m. Earlier in the evening, another student's purse was snatched outside Dorian Books on Elm Street, YSU police said.
Grant for marine patrol
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County Sheriff's Department Berlin Lake Marine Patrol has received a 14,107 grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to maintain safe boating and to assist in the enforcement of watercraft laws. Grants are used to provide emergency response to boating accidents, routine patrols and for safety equipment.
