HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY Mary Theresa Luzar



Born: April 27, 1907, in Pittsburgh.
Parents: A daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Bisada, Polish immigrants.
Address: The family moved to Girard when she was about three years of age.
Married: Frank Luzar at St. Rose Church in July 1931, and they celebrated 51 years of marriage prior to his death March 23, 1982.
Family: Her family includes Stephen and Vivian Luzar, William and Mary Lou Luzar, Mary Fredericks and Eleanor Jonson; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Siblings: Her three brothers and three sisters are deceased.
Schooling: She attended St. Rose School.
Employment: Prior to her marriage she worked at Ohio Leather Works in Girard, where she dyed skins white before they were used to make shoes and belts. During World War II she worked at U.S. Steel, McDonald Works, where she scheduled tonnage for crane operators during the manufacturing of vital steel for military equipment and vehicles. She became a full-time wife and mother after the war, and when her children were grown she worked for Dr. Sam Tochtenhagen for 17 years.
Church affiliations: Attends weekly Mass at St. Rose Church.
Entertainment: She attended live performances at the Keith Albee Theatre (which later became The Palace Theater) in Youngstown around 1926, and Kenley Players productions in Warren, where she met many celebrities. More recently she has attended performances of "The Phantom of the Opera" in New York and Toronto and stage performances at Trumbull New Theatre. She also enjoyed going to Warner Brothers movies, dancing, picnics, concerts and parties.
Activities: She enjoys watching the food channel on TV and has been a great cook with Slovenian foods as her specialty. She gardened until she was 98, and always enjoyed crocheting, sewing, bingo, word finder puzzles and scratch-off tickets.
Personal: She attributes her longevity to God's good grace as well as eating healthy, working hard and walking. She has never tasted alcohol or smoked, and never uses bad language.
Residence: Lives in her own home with the assistance of her sons, daughters and daughters-in law.
Celebration: Is to be featured on the Willard Scott program on NBC and will be honored at a family celebration April 27 at her home.
