BOARDMAN -- Students preparing for the ACT college admission test can receive extra preparation at FedEx Kinko's copy center in Boardman or The Ursuline Center in Canfield. Morning, afternoon or evening test-prep classes will be held at these locations for five Sundays beginning tomorrow. Thirteen hours of prep classes will cost 169. Buddhist nun to speak
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Faith Adiele, the first black Buddhist nun in Thailand, will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Sebastian Mueller Theater of the McKelvey Campus Center as part of the Heinz Lecture Series at Westminster College. Adiele will present "Meeting Faith: The Forest Journals of a Black Buddhist Nun," based on her award-winning memoir about her experience in Thailand, "Meeting Faith: An Inward Odyssey." The program is free and open to the public.
Re-enactments at SRU
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University will be recreating the Civil War, with battle skirmishes, demonstrations and tours of their landmark Old Stone House on April 28 and 29. The re-enactments will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. both days. For more information, call (724) 738-4964.
Student loan applications
YOUNGSTOWN -- Application forms for low-interest student loans are available from the Mahoning County Medical Society Foundation for Mahoning and Trumbull County students who are enrolled in medical school, a school of osteopathic medicine or participating in the bridge program at the third-year level or higher with Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. The interest on the loan will be forgiven if the recipient returns to Mahoning or Trumbull County to practice medicine and becomes a member of the Mahoning County Medical Society. June 1 is the application deadline. Forms are available by calling the society at (330) 533-4880.
'Global Literacy' seminar
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster College is hosting "Global Literacy: The Challenges of Globalization and Diversity" at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the McKelvey Campus Center. This seminar, presented by the Westminster Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning and the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh, is for high school teachers, curriculum personnel and high school principals, and will focus on understanding and responding to the challenges of globalization and diversity. Free GED testing
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown City Schools is offering free General Equivalency Degree testing the mornings of May 7 and 8 and the evenings of May 14 and 15. Adult Basic Literacy Education will oversee testing at Saint John's Episcopal Church from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 7 and 8 and from 5 to 9 p.m. May 14 and 15. For more information, call (330) 744-8715. ABLE is also offering classes for adults learning English as a second language mornings at The English Center, and Organizacion Civica Y Cultural Hispana Americana and evening classes at Campbell High School. Citizenship classes are also being offered at the English Center through ABLE. All classes are free.
