YOUNGSTOWN -- Residents of the city's North Side are invited to a community meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hayes Middle School, 1616 Ford Ave. The evening will feature a 1 spaghetti dinner and a showcase of the educational programs provided by the school. The session will also serve as a community information meeting with many local social service and other agencies participating, including the public library, the Lead Program, Weed and Seed, Unison, YWCA, Humility of Mary and more.
Vigil to recall victims
WARREN -- The 22nd annual Victim Rights Week Vigil to commemorate victims of violent crime will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, 309 N. Park Ave. Judge John M. Stuard of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court will speak, and the names of those who died as a result of violence in the past year will be read. All will be invited to light a candle in memory of their loved ones. Miriam Fife, victim and witness advocate with the county prosecutor's office, said the event is for all victims, their friends and family and the public to attend. Work on Route 164
COLUMBIANA -- Ohio Department of Transportation will begin work Monday to resurface state Route 164 in Columbiana County. Route 164 will be resurfaced from the intersection of state Routes 45 and 517 to Metz Road just south of the city. Traffic will be maintained with flaggers. ODOT's contractor for the 834,476 project is Central-Allied Enterprises Inc., from Canton. The completion date is June 30. State Route 164 will be closed during the day next week from Lisbon to state Route 11 in Columbiana for a culvert replacement. Traffic on Route 164 traffic will be detoured east on state Route 517 to state Route 7 north to state Route 14 west back to Route164.
Hughes trial to proceed
CANFIELD -- A trial will proceed for Brian T. Hughes, Springfield Township fire chief, who is charged in a fake 911 call for what authorities allege was a prearranged barn fire. Hughes, 45, of Rapp Road, New Middletown, had turned himself in to Beaver Township police in February. Beaver Police Chief Carl N. Frost said a fire captain, at Hughes' direction, had the property owner report the April 2005 fire when it was actually a controlled burn. Capt. Charles Gossard is charged with making false alarms. He is to have a status hearing in count court in June. Hughes and his legal counsel met with the prosecutor Friday for a pretrial conference. No trial date has been set.
Recycling open house
STRUTHERS -- The city will celebrate Earth Day by having a recycling open house at the recycling drop-off site behind city hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today. There will be giveaways from the Green Team, refreshments, and a drawing for a prize. To be eligible for the drawing, residents must guess how many pull-tabs are in a jar. Posters of mural for sale
SALEM -- Posters of the bicentennial mural are available at the Salem Historical Society gift shop
The large original mural was hung on the Karlis Building at the corner of East Pershing and South Broadway last summer.
Noted artist Don Getz drew the mural of 54 blocks and 80 historical people. The 54 squares reflect the 54 lots of "Original Salem" of April 30, 1806, when the town was founded by Zadok Street and John Straughan.
Salem historian Dale Shaffer has also has prepared a book detailing the histories of the individuals on the mural. The 18-inch by 28-inch posters, are 6, and Shaffer's book is 20.
The society gift shop is at 208 S. Broadway and open from 9 a.m. to noon Monday and Wednesday. People may also obtain the posters by calling (330) 337-8514.
Lodge groundbreaking
VIENNA -- The groundbreaking for a 7.5 million lodge at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station will be Monday.
U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, was able to obtain federal money for the project, which will fund a lodge for 338 reservists in the 910th Airlift Wing.
The contract for the lodge construction was awarded to Better Built/Jack Gibson Construction of Trenton, Ohio.
The project is scheduled for completion next April.
