In 1943, during World War II, tens of thousands of Jews living in the Warsaw Ghetto begin a valiant but futile battle against Nazi forces. In 1951, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, relieved of his Far East command by President Truman, bids farewell in an address to Congress in which he quotes a line from a ballad: "Old soldiers never die; they just fade away." In 1975, India launches its first satellite atop a Soviet rocket. In 1982, astronauts Sally K. Ride and Guion S. April 19, 1982: Mahoning County Sheriff James A. Traficant Jr. says that his department will be unable to perform even its mandated duties, much less maintain patrols and conduct investigations, if he is not given a supplemental appropriation and has to layoff 23 employees.

April 19, 1967: A violent argument over a bill for a used generator ends in the shooting death of Lloyd McCullough, 31. Police are questioning Robert Parks, 23, the owner of Bob's Sunoco at 303 W. Rayen.

Gust J. Alteno, the man who had the top score among 47 men who took the Civil Service examination for city patrolman, apparently wasn't eligible to take the test because he does not live in Youngstown. He lives in Campbell.
April 19, 1932: Scheduled pay increases for Youngstown city school teachers are canceled and salaries for the coming school year will be cut 10 percent as the school board attempts to balance a projected 908,000 deficit. The salary cuts will save 140,000.
