Ohio's top grapplers to take on all-stars of USA Dream Team



Fitch's coach said Ohio was picked because its star wrestlers have the most depth.
AUSTINTOWN -- For years, the state of Ohio has wanted a crack at the USA Wrestling Dream team. Saturday it will be a reality, as the 11th Dream Team Classic dual meet will feature the USA National All-Stars against 14 of Ohio's best at Fitch High School.
In another match, 14 more Ohioans will take on a Pennsylvania all-star squad in a Border War match.
Fitch High coach Brett Powell said, "This is the biggest single high school wrestling event in the country.
"Ohio was chosen this year because we had more depth then anyone else in the nation."
"The USA team coming here has wrestled in every major all-star tournament, which includes the Dapper Dan in Pittsburgh and another in California," said Powell.
The Ohio-Pennylvania match is scheduled for 5 p.m., with the Ohio-USA match to follow at 7:15 p.m.
Key matches
Tony Jameson of Fitch (135 pounds) and Nathan Sharp (285) of West Branch, who between them won five state championships, are scheduled to compete for Ohio against Pennsylvania.
Jameson will also wrestle in a featured match against J.J. Johnson of Rockford, Mich., in the Dream Team Classic. Johnson is a two-time state champion and four-time qualifier.
Also, Boardman's Justin Powell will compete in the Dream Team Classic at 215 pounds against Jared Platt of Blair Academy (N.J.).
Other wrestlers scheduled to compete for Ohio against Pennsylvania are Matt Mauer (103) of Medina, Mike Hillock (112) of Massillon Jackson, Pat Harrington (119) of Sandusky St. Mary's, Jordan McGuire (125) of Miamisburg, Adam Haas (130) of Massillon Jackson, Joe Newland (140) of St. Paris Graham, Jared Lijoi (145) of Uniontown Lake, Muhammad Abdur-Rahiem (152) of Cincinnati Princeton, Derek Foore (160) of Wadsworth, David Thompson (171) of St. Paris Graham, John Weakley (189) of CVCA and Dan Cogar (215) of Barberton.
Derrick Fletcher of Ravenna, who wrestled for Powell at Fitch from 1986-89 and was a two-time state qualifier, will coach the Ohio stars.

The other Ohioans scheduled to compete in the Dream Team Classic are Sam White (103) of Massillon Perry, Bo Touris (112) of Lakota West, Cordell Longstreath (119) of St. Paris, Bryan Dean (125) of Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, Darren Boing (130) of Bedford Chanel, Matt Reedy (140) of Ravenna, Kevin Hardy (145) of Solon, Thomas Straughn (152) of Massillon Perry, Colt Sponseller (160) of West Holmes, Justin Kilgore (171) of Berea, Chris Honeycut (189) of Lakewood St. Edward and Brendon Barlowe of Westerville Central. All of the Ohioans were state champions this season.
The USA stars scheduled to compete are Joey Farnsworth (103) of Cary, N.C.; Eric Olanowski (112) of Kellam, Va.; Zach Sanders (119) of Wabasha-Kellogg, Minn.; Boris Novachkov (125) of Freemont, Calif.; Kellen Russell (130) of Blair Academy, N.J.; Vicente Varela (135) of Rio Rancho, N.M.; Luke Silver (140) of Bishop Lynch, Texas; Luke Ashmore (145) of Bishop Lynch, Texas; Albert White (152) of St. Rita High in Chicago; Ryan Smith (160) of Crook County, Ore.; Kirk Smith (171) of Contennal, Idaho; Clayton Foster (189) of Kamiah, Idaho, and Dom Bradley (285) of Blue Spring, Mo.
Tickets at the gate will cost 10, while groups of kids (10 or more) will be 5 apiece.
