Game-winning single in eighth boosts Harding past Boardman



Shawn Roman pitched a two-hitter as Ursuline beat Warren JFK, 5-0.
WARREN -- Dan Popadak's infield single with two outs and the bases loaded drove in Brett Kingery with the winning run, as Warren Harding edged Boardman 8-7 in eight innings, in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday.
The Raiders (6-2) trailed 6-2 but scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. After the Spartans took a one-run lead in the top of the eighth, Warren Harding loaded the bases for Popadak, who grounded to the hole between third base and the shortstop.
Popadak also doubled, while Brian McClung had three hits and Brett Kingery two. Josh Fulmer (2-0) pitched the eighth inning in relief of Andy Dobson and Greg Williams.
Kevin McCulloh (who doubled), Mike Popio and Corey Keller all had two hits for the Spartans.
Ursuline 5, Warren JFK 0
STRUTHERS -- Shawn Roman pitched a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts and no walks as Ursuline High blanked Warren JFK, 5-0, in a Steel Valley Conference baseball game Wednesday at Cene Park.
Ed Rohan had a double, a single and two RBIs and Matt Yarab added a two-run single to key Ursuline (6-2, 1-0 SVC).
Warren JFK fell to 6-4-1 and 0-1.
Salem 16, East Liverpool 6
EAST LIVERPOOL -- Zack O'Brien led Salem's 16-hit attack with three safeties, including a double, and he scored twice.
Jim Armeni went 3-for-4 with a double and five RBIs, and Sean McKee added two singles and three runs scored for the Quakers (4-6, 1-3 Metro Athletic Conference). Chip Hank and Nick Lesky both singled twice.
Kevin Riggle doubled and singled for the Potters (0-3, 0-1).
Lakeview 10, Liberty 2
LIBERTY -- Eric Pirtz went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases, and Mark Novotny went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, and two runs scores to lead Lakeview (3-6, 2-1) in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
Dave DeJacimo added a double and two singles, and drove in three runs. He was also the winning pitcher, striking out six.
Jon Krause and Ryan Karson had two hits each for Liberty (2-5, 2-1). One of Karson's was a double.
East Palestine 25, Mineral Ridge 2
MINERAL RIDGE -- The Bulldogs remained undefeated with a 20-hit attack.
Jake Harvey had three hits for East Palestine (10, 6-0 Inter Tri-County League Tier One), with a home run, five RBIs and five runs scored. Nick Baiamonte and Matt Greene also homered, and Baiamonte -- the winning pitcher -- drove in six runs. Dan Hanolt singled twice and doubled for the Bulldogs.
Jackson-Milton 12, Southern 4
NORTH JACKSON -- Mike Nagy and last-inning reliever Ryan Barta (7) combined to pitch a five-hitter while Nagy registered 11 strikeouts to pace Jackson-Milton (6-4, 4-3 Inter-Tri-County League Tier Two). Nagy is 5-1.
Nick Serb had double, single and three RBIs and Dan Clawson a three-run single to key the Bluejays' attack, while Rob Easton had two singles and two RBIs and Bryan Gibbs two singles and one RBI.
Springfield 14, Crestview 3
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Senior right-hander Jeremy Savaet had seven strikeouts and one walk in pitching a five-inning six-hitter for the Tigers (10-3, 4-2 ITCL Tier One).
Of Springfield's 13 hits, senior Andy Richey went 3-for-3 with four RBIs, Dane Dobson had three hits and four RBIs and Bryan Visingardi, a sophomore, had two hits and an RBI.
One of the hits for Dobson, a senior, was a double. Todd Kibby also tripled for the home team.
For Crestview, Cory Hill had two hits including a two-run homer and the Rebels' other RBI. Teammates Matt Petrosky and Craig Noel each had a double.
Leetonia 10, McDonald 5
LEETONIA -- Ryan Gruszecki went 4-for-4 with a double, and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Bears (3-5, 3-4) in an Inter Tri-County League game.
Bobby Howe added two hits, including a triple, and three RBIs for Leetonia, while Pat Russell doubled and singled, and Alex Perkins singled twice with two runs driven in. Winning pitcher Jon Williams (2-2) also hit a double.
Mike Thomas and Paul Logar hit back-to-back homers for McDonald (5-2 ITCL) in the fourth inning.
South Range 5, United 3
NORTH LIMA -- Steve Bensinger pitched a complete-game three-hitter and went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double to lead the Raiders.
Bensinger (1-1) fanned seven.
Chris Gause added two hits, including a two-run single in the fifth inning that gave South Range (2-4, 2-3 ITCL) a 5-2 lead.
Kent Roosevelt 7, Southeast 5
RAVENNA -- Richard Hedrick had two hits to lead Southeast (2-8, 0-6) in a Portage Trail Conference game.
Tyler Thomas hit a pair of doubles for Kent (10-2, 4-2), while Jacob Miller had two hits, including a double. Colby Kehres, Philip Smith and David Williams also had two-baggers.
Late Tuesday
CANTON -- Senior Corey Susany (4-0) scattered eight hits through seven innings with four strikeouts to pick up the win for Boardman (5-4, 2-1) in a 14-6 win over Canton GlenOak in a Federal League game.
He also had a two-run home run in the fifth inning. Mike Popio hit two doubles, scored once and drove in three runs.
Mike Kellar hit a two-run double for Boardman in the first inning and also hit a single, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Kevin McCulloh hit two singles, stole a base, scored once and drove in two runs.
Matt Truax and Nick Vitarella each doubled for GlenOak.
