Exhibition game: The SteelHounds will play the Dayton Bombers of the East Coast Hockey League Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Chevrolet Centre. Tickets cost 5. Like last year, SteelHounds tickets do not include a 1.50 parking surcharge that is assessed for other events at the Chevrolet Centre.Regular season: The SteelHounds will open the 2006-07 Central Hockey League season Oct. 20-21 in Memphis against the RiverKings. "It was something we didn't rush in to, it was actually a world-wide search," said Gregory, mentioning talks with hockey officials in Europe and Canada. "Kevin has some invaluable experience both playing and coaching," Gregory said.Coach's nickname: Kaminski's nickname from his playing days is "Killer." Among the NHL players he tangled with were Bob Probert, Tie Domi, Shane Churla and Paul Laus. He's singing a bit of a different tune now. "I look forward to working with the players to make them better people both on and off the ice," said Kaminski, vowing that his squad will be active in community charity functions.Team leaders: Kaminski said winger Jeff Christian and center Chris Richards will be anchors for this year's squad. "The leadership they bring to the team is outstanding. Obviously, you've got to build around key components." Kaminski said he's looking for players with strong character, chemistry and resiliency.No affiliation: Last year, the SteelHounds had an agreement with the Cleveland Barons of the American Hockey League. Because Cleveland relocated to Worcester, Mass., Gregory said the agreement has expired. "Columbus was nice enough to give us a couple of spots at the AHL camp," Gregory said. Forwards Shaun Landolt and Kelly Thomson are training with the Syracuse (N.Y.) Crunch. "We continue to try and [pursue] an affiliation," said Gregory, adding that it's not uncommon for CHL teams to not have one. "Only about half the teams in our league have one," Gregory said.
