ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Frank Thomas homered for the fifth consecutive game and drove in three runs to help AL West-leading Oakland beat Tampa Bay. Thomas has connected in five straight games three times in his career. This was the first time since May 24-29, 1994. He tied the franchise record for homers in consecutive games held by George Alusik (1962), Dave Kingman (1986) and Matt Stairs (1998).
Angels 4, Blue Jays 3
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Jered Weaver struck out Troy Glaus with the bases loaded to help preserve his 11th victory, and Los Angeles took advantage of a first-inning injury to Toronto ace Roy Halladay. Weaver (11-2) threw a career-high 113 pitches over 52/3 innings. The rookie allowed three runs and five hits, including Adam Lind's first major league homer.
Yankees 9, Orioles 4
BALTIMORE -- Derek Jeter extended his career-high hitting streak to 20 games, going 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs to lead New York over Baltimore. Jaret Wright (10-7) allowed three runs and three hits in 61/3 innings to earn his first win since Aug. 12. He did not permit a runner past first base until Ramon Hernandez homered in the fifth.
Red Sox 9, Royals 3
BOSTON -- David Ortiz hit his career-best 48th homer and Wily Mo Pena drove in two runs to help Boston snap a three-game skid with a win over Kansas City. The Red Sox avoided being swept at home by the Royals for the first time since April 1996. Boston remains 71/2 games behind Minnesota in the wild-card race. Pena, who started in left field and batted cleanup in place of Manny Ramirez, went 3-for-4. Ramirez sat out with a sore right knee and was expected back Tuesday in Baltimore.
Rangers 4, Mariners 2
SEATTLE -- Michael Young got three hits and drove in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning to help Texas beat Seattle and end a three-game losing streak. C.J. Wilson (2-2) earned the win and Akinori Otsuka worked the ninth for his 32nd save in 35 chances. The loss ended the Mariners' four-game winning streak. Rangers starter Adam Eaton tossed six-plus innings, allowing two runs and eight hits without a walk. Seattle's Ben Broussard hit his career-best 20th home run. Jon Huber took the loss.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Marlins 3, Phillies 0
MIAMI -- Dontrelle Willis threw a three-hitter and struck out a career-best 12 in his first shutout of the season, helping the Marlins earn a split of a four-game series between NL wild-card hopefuls. Willis (10-11) retired his last 13 batters and never allowed a runner to advance past second in his eighth career shutout. He threw 80 of his 122 pitches for strikes and walked only one.
Brewers 4, Astros 0
MILWAUKEE-- Dave Bush pitched a five-hitter and struck out a season-high 10 in his third career shutout, leading the Brewers past the Astros. It was the second shutout this season for Bush (11-10), who earned his fifth win since Aug. 1. He has three complete games this year and six in his career. Tony Graffanino and Mike Rivera homered for Milwaukee, which had lost 13 of 15 games overall and 10 of 14 against the Astros this season.
Dodgers 9, Mets 1
NEW YORK -- Eric Stults pitched with unusual poise for a 26-year-old making his first major league start, giving the Los Angeles Dodgers a big September boost. Stults limited the New York Mets to two hits in six innings, and Kenny Lofton gave him an early lead with a three-run triple off a shaky Steve Trachs
Braves 2, Cubs 1
ATLANTA -- Lance Cormier pitched seven solid innings and struck out a career-high 10, and Brian McCann doubled in the go-ahead run in the sixth to help the Braves hand the Cubs their ninth straight road loss. The Braves, who have won the first three games of the four-game set, began the day five games behind NL wild-card leader San Diego. Cormier (3-4) allowed eight hits and didn't walk anyone.
Rockies 13, Nationals 9
DENVER -- Todd Helton hit a tiebreaking grand slam in the seventh inning, Matt Holliday homered and drove in three runs, and the Rockies outslugged the Nationals to sweep their season series. Helton was hitless in his previous 10 plate appearances before hitting his fourth career slam. Holliday finished 3-for-5 with his 28th home run of the year.
Diamondbacks 9, Cardinals 7
PHOENIX -- Tony Clark and Eric Byrnes hit solo home runs in the eighth inning to lift Arizona over St. Louis. With two outs in the eighth, Clark and Byrnes belted consecutive pitches from Cardinals reliever Jorge Sosa (3-11). Clark's pinch-hit homer, a 410-foot shot into the pool area in right-center field, broke a 7-7 tie. It was his sixth home run of the season and his second pinch-hit homer.
Padres 10, Giants 2
SAN FRANCISCO -- Brian Giles drove in four runs and the San Diego Padres avoided a three-game sweep with a 10-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Sunday night. Winning pitcher Woody Williams doubled on the way to his third career three-hit game. He drove in a run and scored twice, helping the Padres improve to 2-11 in the last 13 meetings between the clubs.
