Today is Sunday, Sept. 10, the 253rd day of 2006. There are 112 days left in the year. On this date in 1813, an American naval force commanded by Oliver H. Perry defeats the British in the Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812.
In 1846, Elias Howe receives a patent for his sewing machine. In 1919, New York City welcomes home Gen. John J. Pershing and 25,000 soldiers who served in the U.S. First Division during World War I. In 1939, Canada declares war on Nazi Germany. In 1945, Vidkun Quisling is sentenced to death in Norway for collaborating with the Nazis (he is executed by firing squad in October 1945). In 1955, the long-running TV Western series "Gunsmoke," starring James Arness as Marshal Matt Dillon, premieres on CBS television. In 1977, convicted murderer Hamida Djandoubi, a Tunisian immigrant, becomes the last person to date to be executed by the guillotine in France.

Two Ohio Edison Co. employees are killed in separate accidents in Trumbull County. Alex E. Markley dies after his truck was struck by a train in Gustavus Township, and lineman Isaac McDonnell, 46, was electrocuted while working at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds.
September 10, 1966: Alex Antonio Jr., one of the Youngstown district's outstanding amateur golfers, will forego his final year of eligibility as the No. 1 man on the Ohio State University golf team to turn pro.
The interchange being built in Austintown where routes I-680, I-80 and state Route 11 meet will contain 13 bridges and will be the second largest interchange in the country.
September 10, 1956: A car that crashed a stop sign at Palmyra and Hewitt-Gifford roads in Warren strikes a car carrying Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Michaels and their two children, killing the couple and injuring the children. Police say the car that went through the stop sign had its headlights off.
A record low for the date of 37 degrees and light frost hit the Youngstown area.
The congregation of St. Mark's Lutheran Church breaks ground for its new $168,000 church building at Mill Creek Drive and Glenwood Ave.
September 10, 1931: Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge David G. Jenkins admits having received a vacation trip and medical treatment at the expense of Pennsylvania-Ohio Power and Light, but protests his good faith in accepting the help. Jenkins faces disbarment.
After dropping to a low of 66 in the early morning hours, the mercury in Youngstown rises to 91 degrees.
