AKRON -- YSU freshman Justin Dickman finished eighth to lead the men's squad while fellow freshman Lisa Lee paced the women's squad with a 22nd-place finish at the Tommy Evans Invitational on Saturday.
Dickman clocked in with a time of 21:57 at Firestone Metropark's four-mile course to guide the team to a third-place finish.
Junior R.D. Goodright was the second Penguin across the finish line with a time of 22:06.6, and J.D. Sheppard finished one spot back in 22:07. Dan Nemergut placed 14th with a time of 22:25, and Nick Kruse closed out the scoring five with a time of 22:27.00.
Lee ran a time of 21:31 while freshman Laura Yamsek placed 26th with a time of 22:07.6. Amy Moore finished 33rd (23:23), Jen Roman finished 36th (24:17) and Madelyn McGhee (24:24).
Women's soccer
BOWLING GREEN --Stacy Lucas scored at 23:28 of the first half, as Bowling Green defeated Youngstown State, 1-0, in a women's soccer game Friday.
YSU (1-4) goalkeeper Caitlin Bodzioney had six saves.
Bowling Green (2-4) held a 24-6 edge in shots and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

Pavlik to fightat Chevy Centre
YOUNGSTOWN -- Kelly Pavlik will headline the first night of boxing at the Chevrolet Centre.
Pavlik, the unbeaten middleweight who is quickly moving to the top of the world rankings, will fight an opponent yet to be determined Nov. 2 at the new downtown arena.
Pavlik's fight will be the main event of the Top Rank-promoted card. The remainder of the fights and ticket prices will be announced shortly.
South Range HOF
NORTH LIMA -- The following individuals were inducted into the South Range Athletics Hall of Fame. Kim Nemergut, 2001, track and field; Chris Hatch, 2001, basketball; Roger Gaskins, 1997, football; Lyle Weaver, 1982, football; Dale Sheely Sr., honorary.
Nelson Ledges
CANFIELD -- Canfield's David Pintaric, driving a Dodge Viper, sponsored by WRP Investments and Kryderacing, won the Touring One class at the Sports Car Club of America raced at Nelson Ledges over the Labor Day weekend..
It was Pintaric's third win in a row at Nelson Ledges and it put him in second place in the Northeast Division Points for 2006.
Napolitan ninthon Dew Tour
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Anthony Napolitan of Austintown placed ninth during the Dew Action Sports Tour-Toyota Challenge at HP Pavilion over the weekend.
Napolitan's score in the BMX Dirt competition was 84.50. Australians occupied the top two spots as Ryan Guettler scored 93.25 and runner-up Luke Parslow, 91.75.
Napolitan, however, is just 12 points behind Parslow -- the leader -- in the BMX Dirt standings, 288-276.
Race canceled
COLUMBIANA -- The Columbiana Fall 5K Classic -- formerly the Firestone Fall Classic -- has been canceled. The race was scheduled for Sept. 30.
Swogger missesMontana game
MISSOULA, Mont. -- With Washington State transfer Josh Swogger out with an injury, sophomore quarterback Cole Bergquist took over and set a career-high in passing yards to lead Montana to a 36-7 win over South Dakota State. Swogger, an Ursuline High graduate, transferred to the Grizzlies before this season and threw for 122 yards in an opening loss at Iowa.

WNBA Finals
DETROIT -- Katie Smith has won Olympic gold, an American Basketball League title and scored 5,000 points in the pros. Entering this season, though, her Hall of Fame resume lacked one crucial element: a WNBA championship.

Smith, a former Ohio State standout and the sister of Springfield High football coach John L. Smith, scored 17 points and had two crucial baskets in the fourth quarter to seal the Detroit Shock's decisive Game 5 80-75 victory over the defending champion Sacramento Monarchs.
It was Detroit's second WNBA title in the past four years.
Deanna Nolan was the finals MVP after a 24-point performance Saturday, but it was Smith who was getting all the attention after the game.
"This one is special," said Smith, who scored in double figures in four of the five games of the series. "When you are younger, you think you'll get chance after chance after chance, but now I know that's not how it works."
Smith hurled the ball high in the air as time expired Saturday, and the party was on at Joe Louis Arena and its announced crowd of more than 19,000 -- the second-highest total in the history of the finals.
"Katie's a great, great player and she did just what we expected her to do," Shock coach Bill Laimbeer said. "She could have easily been the MVP, too."
Hornish takes poleat IRL Chicagoland
JOLIET, Ill. -- Sam Hornish Jr. won the pole Saturday for the PEAK Antifreeze Indy 300, which will decide one of the closest IRL series championship races.
A two-time series champion, Hornish earned his fourth pole this season and the 10th of his career with a lap of 215.319. Scott Dixon (214.592) will start alongside Hornish, with defending points champion Dan Wheldon (214.387) and standings leader Helio Castroneves (213.922) in the third and fourth positions for the season's final event.
"We just hit the gears right on," said Hornish, a two-time winner at Chicagoland Speedway. "The car was right where it needed to be. I was a little bit surprised [with] the lap that we put out there."
Castroneves, seeking his first IRL championship, has 431 points -- one more than Marlboro Team Penske teammate Hornish. Target Chip Ganassi drivers Wheldon and Dixon, the 2003 series champion, trail by 19 and 21 points.
"[At] this place, so many things happen, it doesn't matter where you start," Castroneves said. "I feel I have a very good car. ... Hopefully, we can get out of here very happy."
