NORTH JACKSON -- Youngstown Chapter of the Slovak Catholic Federation will have its 13th annual pilgrimage Sept. 17 in honor of Our Sorrowful Mother at Our Lady of Lebanon Shrine, 2759 N. Lipkey Road. Devotions will begin at 3 p.m. followed by an outdoor Way of the Cross. A Mass in Slovak is planned at 4 followed by dinner. Fall seminar slated
BOARDMAN -- Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, 471 Mathews Road, Boardman, will hold a free fall seminar next weekend on the "Christ, Media, and the Humane Environment." The speaker, the Rev. Dr. T. David Gordon, professor of Greek and religion at Grove City College, Grove City, Pa., will explore how various media shape individuals and cultures. Sessions are planned from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday and 9:30 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 16. A lunch break will be at local restaurants. Registration is not necessary. CCD classes
McDONALD -- Classes for Confraternity of Christian Doctrine and Youth Ministry Studies will begin Sept. 24 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 618 Ohio Ave. Youth ministry classes will be at 8:30 a.m. and CCD classes at 8:45 a.m. The first confirmation class will be at 8 a.m. Sunday in the CCD building. Registration for new students will be taken from 8:15 to 8:45 a.m. Sept. 24 in the CCD office. Fees may be paid at this time. The cost is $15 for kindergarten and first grade and $23 for second grade and sacrament classes. The family fee limit is $45, excluding sacramental fees.
Society hosts speaker
BOARDMAN -- Youngstown-Warren Chapter of the Society of St. John Chrysostom will host Mike Aquilina of Pittsburgh as speaker during a meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, 7782 Glenwood Ave. His topic will be "The Family on Mission: Lessons from the Early Church." ALPHA course set
WARREN -- First United Methodist Church, 309 N. Park Ave., will sponsor a free ALPHA course starting at 6 p.m. Wednesday. ALPHA, a 10-week introduction to the Christian faith, means: A, anyone can come; L, learning and laughter; P, pasta and other food; H, helping one another; and A, ask anything. Last outdoor service
GIRARD -- Our Way Home Christian Fellowship will hold its final outdoor service of the summer at 11 a.m. Sunday at Girard-Liberty Park Pavilion. A cookout will follow. In case of rain, the service will be at the church, 429 Ohio Ave.
Flame Fellowship
BOARDMAN -- Greater Youngstown Chapter of Flame Fellowship International, an interdenominational ministry, will meet Sept. 18 at Georgeanna Parker Activity Center in Boardman Township Park. Fellowship will be at 6:30 p.m. The program will be at 7 p.m. with speaker Eleanor Gudzinas, whose topic will be personality profiles. The 26th annual convention is scheduled Oct. 26-28 in Cleveland.

GIRARD -- Friendship Baptist Church, 111 Water St., will celebrate the 85th anniversary of the church and the 25th anniversary of its pastor, the Rev. Julius T. Davis, during a worship service at 11 a.m. Sept. 24. The theme is " Walking Worthy of Our Calling/In Unity," and guest speaker will be the Rev. Jay Alford. Ridge Rally Day set
MINERAL RIDGE -- First Presbyterian Church, 3654 Main St., will hold a Rally Day on Sunday, and third-graders will receive Bibles. The day marks the return to regular hours. Church school for all ages will begin at 9:15 a.m. and worship at 10:30 a.m. The Church Growth and Fellowship Committee will host a picnic afterward. Child care will be provided at all services.

Fall schedule in Liberty
LIBERTY -- Liberty Presbyterian Church, 1451 Church Hill-Hubbard Road, will begin its fall schedule with Rally Day on Sunday. A breakfast of coffee, juice, bagels and muffins will be at 8:45 in fellowship hall. Worship will be at 9:30 a.m. with the Rev. Jeanine Haven. Sunday school classes will follow. A pot-luck dinner is planned at 5 p.m. Sept. 17 followed by a worship service led by the Word and Music Ministry group. The group uses Liberty Presbyterian for its "church without walls" programs at 6:30 p.m. Sundays. Participants are asked to take food to share and table service. The church will provide beverages.
Christian education
HOWLAND -- Howland Community Church, 198 Niles-Cortland Road, S.E., will mark the beginning of its Christian education year with events Sunday. Children from age 3 through eighth grade may participate in Creation Station at the 10 a.m. worship service. Activities from 5:30 to 7 p.m. will be an adult Bible study, "Invitation to the New Testament," and "Pickle Night," at which children from kindergarten through fifth grade may decorate pickles for a pageant.

GIRARD -- Girard First United Methodist Church, 22 N. Market St., will mark Rally Day on Sunday as the church begins its fall Sunday School and worship schedule. The opening Sunday School assembly will be at 9:30 a.m., and the Rev. Doug Meek will present a Sunday School is Cool Magic Show. Students then will attend Sunday School classes. Classes are available for preschoolers to adults. An adult-staffed nursery care is provided for infants and toddlers. The worship service will be at 10:45 a.m. featuring the adult choir and Vacation Bible School children. At noon, there will be a free picnic lunch with Pete Shelby presenting a concert.
