COLUMBIANA -- Despite the Columbiana High football team's 2-0 start, Coach Bob Spaite wasn't impressed.
And Clippers running back Joey Winters wasn't that thrilled with his efforts.
That all changed Friday at Firestone Park as the Clippers and Winters came up big in a 28-6 win over Western Reserve (2-1).
Winters rushed for 125 yards on 14 carries. He scored three touchdowns plus a two-point conversion and added a crowd-pleasing backflip.
"I'm really happy when we win," Winters said. "And tonight I was really excited out there."
Long series
The Clippers had just one series in the first period but it ate up a lot of time and resulted in a 3-0 lead thanks to Josh Harrold's 25-yard field goal.
On the first play of the second quarter, Winters hauled in a Jerrett Weldon pass and tip-toed down the right sideline for a 58-yard score and a 10-0 lead. Winters gained about 60 yards after the catch.
After that, Columbiana twice was given a short field to work with. But despite garnering some good yards from some unusual formations, the Clippers kept shooting themselves in the foot with mistakes and penalties.
But thanks to Harrold and a 26-yard field goal, Columbiana was up 13-0 at intermission.
"To that point in the game we were really doing some incredibly silly things," Spaite said. "The defense really bailed us out."
Winters opened the second half with a 34-yard burst but promptly fumbled on the next play.
Following a bad snap on a Blue Devils punt, Winters redeemed himself with a 15-yard scoring burst. He then hauled in Weldon's two-point conversion pass as Columbiana went out 21-0 at 8:21 of the third period.
Wrapping it up
Five minutes later, the Clippers wrapped things up when Winters scored from 15 yards away for his third score and a 28-0 lead.
Led by Mackie McGarry, Columbiana's defense held the Blue Devils to 68 yards total offense.
McGarry had seven solo tackles and five assists while teammate Anthony Melone was credited with four solos and four assists.
"They were the more physical team," Western Reserve coach Mike Kopachy said. "And they executed much better than us.
"On the night we were unable to establish anything up front and when that happens it makes it hard to do anything," Kopachy said.
Spaite said, "Joey's our horse, I'm not telling any secrets there. Plus Harold, for being just a sophomore is coming into his own as well. Now, it's on to the challenge of the league schedule and we sure don't get breaks from here on out."
Winters too is ready for the league games.
"There's no doubt this is a great league," Winters said. "And we're looking forward to the challenge."
Blue Devils quarterback Brandon Moherman completed 13 of 24 passes for 138 yards. One was a 7-yard touchdown to Chris Truitt.
