"Trapped in the Towers: The Elevators of 9/11" (8 p.m., A & amp;E): Survivors recount their harrowing efforts to escape the shafts of the burning World Trade Center in this documentary. Included are a husband and wife who were in separate elevators and didn't learn of the other's survival until days later.
"The Mermaid Chair" (9 p.m., Lifetime): Kim Basinger stars in "The Mermaid Chair," a made-for-TV movie based on the best-selling novel by Sue Monk Kidd. The Oscar-winning actress plays a married woman who experiences a spiritual and emotional awakening when she falls in love with a Benedictine monk.
"Cold Case Files" (9 p.m., A & amp;E): It's Los Angeles' most famous cold case, a murder so beguiling it has spawned a cult following, best-selling books and, later this month, the Brian De Palma film "The Black Dahlia" starring Scarlett Johansson and Josh Hartnett. In 1947, the body of a young actress wannabe named Elizabeth Short was found in a vacant LA lot undressed, bisected at the waist and mutilated. In this edition of "Cold Case Files," host Bill Kurtis revisits the murder investigation. He begins with a look at a book on the probe by former LA detective Steve Hodel, who concludes that his own father, physician George Hodel, is the man who committed the grisly crime. But the Los Angeles Police Department has its own ideas about the case and lets Kurtis get a look inside the official case file. Can the case ever be solved?
