Roads closing for contest
YOUNGSTOWN -- The following drives in Mill Creek MetroParks will be closed for the Community Cup from approximately 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday: New Bears Den, Bears Den, West Glacier, Cross and West Park. All parking for the Community Cup will be in the Wick Recreation Area, accessible by Belle Vista Avenue at McCollum Road.
7th Ward yard sale
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Seventh Ward Coalition is having its annual yard sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Ipe Field, Midlothian Boulevard and Lemoyne Avenue. There will be food vendors. Proceeds will go to the group's scholarship fund.
Sex-offer allegation
BOARDMAN -- Police are investigating a report filed by two Oregon Trail women that a man they invited into their apartment for a visit dropped his pants and propositioned one of the women for sex.
A 56-year-old woman and her 82-year-old mother reported that the man, believed to be in his 80s, knocked on their door about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, and the daughter, who had met the man the previous day while walking, let him in for a visit.
The man asked the women to engage in sexual activity with him and pulled his pants down to expose himself. He was asked to leave and did.
Vehicle caused blaze
POLAND -- A blaze that destroyed the home of a federal judge originated in the engine compartment of the judge's vehicle, which was parked in the garage.
The fire occurred the morning of Sept. 1 at the Riverside Court condominium of U.S. District Judge Peter C. Economus. Chief David Comstock Jr. of the Western Reserve Joint Fire District said it appears accidental and nothing suspicious is suspected.
It isn't determined what component of the engine compartment caused the problem, he said.
Fire termed suspicious
HOWLAND -- Fire officials have labeled the fire of a vacant township home suspicious.
Howland and Weathersfield firefighters responded to a house fire around 9:31 p.m. Wednesday at 2724 Bolin Ave. When firefighters arrived, the vacant structure was engulfed. Officials then allowed the structure to burn for three hours. No injuries were reported, and damage is estimated at $18,000.
Although the fire is labeled suspicious, the cause is under investigation.
Free shots for kids
GIRARD -- The well-child immunization clinic will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Girard Health Department located in the city building.
The clinic is offered free to Girard City children. Dr. James J. Enyeart, medical director, conducts the examinations. Parents are reminded to bring a copy of the child's immunization record. A parent or guardian must accompany children under age 18.
Parents must pre-register their child before the clinic by calling the Health Department, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at (330) 545-6048.
Ex-coach sentenced
BEAVER, Pa. (AP) -- A former volunteer high school softball coach will spend at least six months in jail for having a consensual sex relationship with a former player, who was 17 at the time.
David Robert Brickner, 26, told authorities during a pre-sentence report that he and his wife have an "open marriage" and that he saw nothing wrong with the relationship. He pleaded guilty to corruption of a minor in July.
More serious charges were not filed because the girl was legally old enough to consent to the sex. But a Beaver County judge agreed Wednesday that Brickner abused his position of trust to seduce the girl and sentenced him to six to 231/2 months in jail.
Brickner was an unpaid volunteer assistant coach for the Big Beaver Falls Area School District when he was arrested in April. Under his sentence, Brickner can no longer have contact with the girl. He has been removed from his coaching position and banned from school property.
