Paris Hilton facesdrunken driving charge
LOS ANGELES -- Paris Hilton was arrested early Thursday for investigation of driving under the influence after she was spotted in Hollywood "driving erratically," police said. Hilton was arrested shortly before 12:30 a.m., said police Officer I. Isabella. "The officers observed that Hilton exhibited the symptoms of intoxication. A field sobriety test was conducted at scene, and the officers determined she was driving under the influence," Isabella said, reading from a police statement. He said officers stopped Hilton because she was "driving erratically." Hilton, 25, was booked on suspicion of misdemeanor DUI and released on her own recognizance, he said. Her spokesman, Elliot Mintz, confirmed the arrest and said she had the minimum blood-alchohol level to warrant an arrest. The legal limit in California is 0.08.
Settlement is reachedin fabricated memoir case
NEW YORK -- Author James Frey and Random House and have agreed in principle to settle lawsuits filed by readers who said they were defrauded by fabrications in his best-selling memoir "A Million Little Pieces," according to a published report. Readers who bought the book on or before Jan. 26, the day Frey and the publisher acknowledged that he had made up parts of the book, will be eligible for a full refund, The New York Times reported Thursday, citing an anonymous source familiar with the negotiations. The readers claimed in a lawsuit that they had been defrauded because the book was sold as a memoir instead of fiction. The settlement must be approved by a judge. A Manhattan federal court judge consolidated the lawsuits in June. Ten of the 12 plaintiffs have accepted terms of the settlement, which call on Frey and Random House to pay out no more than a total of $2.35 million, the Times said. That total covers the refund to consumers, lawyers' fees for both sides and an unspecified donation to charity. Under terms of the settlement neither Frey nor the publisher have admitted any wrongdoing, the paper said.
