Caregiver gets prison for theft from woman

WARREN -- A 50-year-old city woman has been sentenced to two years in prison for stealing $86,396 from an 89-year-old Howland woman she had been paid to care for.
Shala Campbell of 1680 Parkman Road Northwest received the sentence Thursday from Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge John M. Stuard after she was convicted on charges of theft, forgery and tampering with evidence.
Judge Stuard told Campbell he would consider releasing her after nine months if Campbell paid restitution in the amount she stole.
Ken Bailey, assistant county prosecutor, said Campbell had been hired by the victim's son to provide home health care and to drive her places.
But Campbell took bank statements, a Social Security card and courtesy checks belonging to the victim and took out a credit card in the victim's name, Bailey said. The thefts occurred between March 1, 2003, and January 2, 2004, Bailey said.
