Friday, September 8, 2006

AUSTINTOWN -- Fake $50 bills are cropping up at township businesses.
The latest episode was about 1 p.m. Wednesday at Wal-Mart on Mahoning Avenue, township police said.
A cashier told police a woman tried to pay for merchandise with a counterfeit bill. The woman told police she got the bill from a rent payment.
Two counterfeit $50 bills were discovered at the IGA on Mahoning Avenue and the Country Fair on North Niles-Canfield Road on Aug. 28.
A woman trying to pay for groceries at the IGA that morning said she had withdrawn money from Sky Bank in Cornersburg. She'd received two fifties, one of which was counterfeit. Police said they took the bill as evidence and gave the woman a receipt to get another $50 from the bank.
The fake bill at the Country Fair also turned up in the morning. A man trying to pay for merchandise told the cashier he got the bill at a Giant Eagle in Niles. He said he would get more money from his car, but he drove away, police said.
