AUSTINTOWN -- A story in The Vindicator's Aug. 29 edition included factual errors about Thomas S. Goldner, 22, of Canfield.
Goldner was neither arrested nor charged with any offense by Austintown police in connection with a brawl Sunday, Aug. 27, at Davidson's Restaurant.
The Vindicator apologizes for the errors.
Board adds 8th class
SALEM -- The Salem Board of Education has added an eighth kindergarten class to reduce the number of pupils in each class.
Superintendent Stephen Larcomb said Wednesday that there will be six classes, each with 22 pupils, and two classes, each with 23 pupils. Larcomb said the district likes to keep the kindergarten classes at 22 to 23 children.
Teacher Patti L'Italien will teach the new class. Another teacher, Mark Winn, was recalled off the district's reduction-in-force list to take L'Italien's place teaching third-grade pupils.
The district consolidated classes and reduced employees before voters approved a new levy. Larcomb said the district is still 18 positions short of the staff it had last spring.
Power failure downtown
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Wednesday afternoon power failure that affected 23 downtown customers was caused by failure of an Ohio Edison transformer at the No. 1 Fire Station, 420 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
Paul Harkey, the utility's Youngstown area manager, said OE got its first call concerning the outage at 2:28 p.m., and the utility restored power to all but the fire station at 4:42 p.m. The fire station has an emergency backup generator.
Home Savings & amp; Loan and the Western Reserve Transit Authority's Federal Station were without power, and some traffic signals were dark, Harkey said.
OE crews were expected to work all night to restore regular power at the fire station, Harkey said.
Dial-A-Ride is ending
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning Youngstown Community Action Partnership discontinues its Dial-A-Ride Transportation Services Component on Friday, which will be the last day for transporting passengers.
"Although this is short notice, rising inflationary costs, increased regulations and the geographic locations of medical service providers has caused this action to become necessary immediately," said a MYCAP press release.
Customers needing transportation services after Friday are urged to call Western Reserve Transit Authority at (330) 744-8431. MYCAP cannot guarantee acceptance by WRTA, however, because the transit authority's criteria for eligibility may differ.
Accepts plea agreement
WARREN -- Saying he was sorry to the bank teller he robbed and to his family, Adam A. Carson accepted a plea agreement Wednesday that will put him behind bars for two years.
Carson, 24, of Newton Falls, son of former county administrator Tony Carson Jr., agreed to plead guilty to one count of robbery. Carson robbed First Place Bank in the Elm Road Plaza in Warren on July 7.
"I made a big mistake. I can't take it back. All I can do is apologize," Carson told a reporter after the hearing in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. "I just want to get on with my life."
Getting accredited
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Neshannock Township Volunteer Fire Department has received level one accreditation by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission for its water rescue division.
Level one accreditation certifies that the organization and its personnel possess the required equipment, knowledge and skills to perform as a team in various water rescue situations.
The Neshannock water rescue team has been training and acquiring equipment over the past three years. The department is working toward its level two accreditation.
Library lot to close
YOUNGSTOWN -- The parking lot at the Main Library, 305 Wick Ave., will close Monday, for about two weeks for repairs and resurfacing.
The Main Library will remain open and patrons will be rerouted to a temporary entrance on Rayen Avenue during the time of the repairs.
Once repairs are complete, the parking lot entrance on Wick Avenue will reopen.
