Hundreds immunized against hepatitis at Kent State

KENT (AP) -- The diagnosis of a Kent State University student with hepatitis A has led the school to immunize hundreds of people as a precaution.
University and local health officials are monitoring those who ate catered meals at the Kent State Student Center -- where the student worked -- between Aug. 18 and 24. They were screening students who returned after the holiday weekend to determine who may need a precautionary shot to prevent the illness, which attacks the liver and can cause fever, diarrhea and jaundice.
About 380 people had been immunized since Saturday, university spokesman Ron Kirksey said.
The male student prepared as many as 500 meals. He became ill in August and is now well.
A second student, a female with symptoms similar to hepatitis, had no link to the first and came to the Kent campus Aug. 24. Kirksey said test results on her had not been received.
