Scrappers raise$1,900 to fight cancer
NILES -- The Scrappers raised more than $1,900 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation during Sunday's doubleheader against the State College Spikes.
The team played in pink jerseys, which were given away through a silent auction following the first game.
Fans also helped support the cause by forming a "Human Pink Ribbon" in center field between the games. Approximately 100 people took part.
Lake will hostvolleyball event
UNIONTOWN -- Lake High School will be site on a volleyball invitational tournament that includes Canfield on Sept. 16. Other teams participating will be Lake, Akron SVSM, Canton South, Revere, Tallmadge, Norton and Heartland Christian.
First-round matches will begin at 9 a.m.
Giuriceo winsunanimous decision
PITTSBURGH -- Jake Giuriceo registered a unanimous decision over Pittsburgh's Bill Moehring (2-1) in the Campbell resident's amateur boxing debut at Station Square recently.
Giuriceo's three-round victory in the 165-pound division was part of a 10-fight amateur card. The 21-year-old Giuriceo is trained by Keith Burnside and Joe Kostic.

Malkin, Pensnear deal
PITTSBURGH -- Evgeni Malkin could officially be a Pittsburgh Penguins player as early as today.
Malkin has spent the last three weeks training in the Los Angeles area, but is expected to sign his Penguins contract today in advance of the start of the team's rookie training camp Thursday.
Malkin's agents said last week that they would open contract talks early this week, and the Penguins are planning a news conference to announce the signing.
Malkin, the No. 2 pick in the 2004 draft, sneaked away from his Russian pro team last month in Finland so he could make a clandestine trip to the United States and begin preparing for his first NHL season.
Malkin's contract terms are effectively set by the NHL labor agreement, so he is expected to sign a deal identical to that reached by last season's rookie of the year, Alexander Ovechkin.
Ovechkin, picked immediately ahead of Malkin in the 2004 draft, has a base salary of $984,200, plus incentives worth $2.85 million per season. Ovechkin's contract includes $850,000 in relatively easy-to-reach incentives and another $2 million in additional bonuses such as winning a major league award.

Louisville'sBush has surgery
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Heisman Trophy hopeful Michael Bush of No. 13 Louisville underwent surgery Monday for a broken leg, a season-ending injury that could finish the running back's outstanding college career.
Bush broke his right leg in two places during the third quarter of a 59-28 win over Kentucky on Sunday. The operation on his tibia was successful and he was to remain in the hospital overnight, university spokesman Rocco Gasparro said.
Bush, a senior, has the option of being redshirted, but coach Bobby Petrino said it would be up to Bush and his family to decide whether to return next fall.
Chargers' Foleyto miss season
SAN DIEGO -- Chargers linebacker Steve Foley will miss the season after being shot near his suburban home by an off-duty police officer.
Foley was placed on the non-football injured reserve list on Monday, a day after he was shot by an off-duty Coronado officer and a week before the Chargers open at Oakland.
The outside linebacker, who was being counted on to help anchor the toughest run defense in the NFL, remained hospitalized in stable condition, according to his agent, David Levine.
Because it wasn't a football injury, the Chargers were letting Levine provide medical updates.
