Jewish Cultural Week: Youngstown

Jewish Cultural Week is Sept. 10-17. Unless otherwise specified, all events are free and open to the public. Scheduled events are:
SEPT. 10
Rick Recht Live in Concert, 6:30 p.m. at Congregation Rodef Sholom, Elm and Woodbine. Tickets are free in advance and $5 at the door. Recht is one of the top touring musicians in Jewish music playing more than 150 concerts each year in the U.S. and abroad. He has revolutionized and elevated the genre of Jewish rock music as a powerful and effective tool for developing Jewish pride and identity in youths and adults.
SEPT. 11
Youngstown Area Jewish Film Competition. "Being Steven Spielberg" (short), "Jewz N the Hood" (short), and "Citizen Stan" (feature) will be shown from noon to 2 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane.
"More Than 1000 Words" will be shown at 4 p.m. at Youngstown State University McDonough Museum of Art, 1 University Plaza.
"To Be An Israeli Woman" will be shown at noon at Butler Museum of Art screening room, 524 Wick Ave.
SEPT. 12
Youngstown Area Jewish Film Competition. "Ludwig Pituco" (short), "Biaat Ha Massiah" (short), and "Marti" (feature) will be shown from noon to 2 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center.
"A Part In This World" will be shown at 4 p.m. at YSU McDonough Museum of Art.
"Being Steven Spielberg," "Jewz N the Hood," "Biaat Ha Massiah," "The Unbroken Circle," and "Ludwig Pituco. All films are shorts and will be shown at noon at Butler Museum of Art screen room.
Youngstown Area Jewish Film Festival. "The Richie Boys" will be shown at 7 p.m. at Austintown Movies, 6000 Mahoning Ave. Cost is $4 in advance at the bursar's office at the Jewish Community Center or $5 at the door.
SEPT. 13
Youngstown Area Jewish Film Competition. "Citizen Stan" will be shown at 4 p.m. at YSU McDonough Museum of Art.
"MAGIC(S)" will be shown at noon at Butler Museum of Art screen room.
Youngstown Area Jewish Film Festival. "The Protocols of Zion" followed by a panel discussion led by Bonnie Deutsch Burdman, JCRC director, will take place at 7 p.m. at YSU Beeghly College of Education Building. Cost is $4 in advance at the bursar's office or $5 at the door.
SEPT. 14
Youngstown Area Jewish Film Competition. "The Unbroken Circle" (short), "A Part in this World" (feature) will be shown from noon to 2 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center.
"Marti-The Passionate Eye" will be shown at 4 p.m. at YSU McDonough Museum of Art.
"More Than 1,000 Words" will be shown at noon at Butler Museum of Art screen room.
Opening of "Exhibition Factories and Factories of Death." This depicts the history of labor in Poland from the 19th century to today through examining its labor sites. Included in the exhibition is material on Holocaust labor, socialist labor and the story of what has become of these sites. Exhibition opening at 6:45 p.m. with a wine and cheese reception at the Jewish Community Center South Wing.
Nathan Gelfand live in concert, 7:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room of the Jewish Community Center. Followed by a dessert reception. Celebrate a joyous milestone in this talented young Jewish musician's life, his Bar Mitzvah project. Nate is a gifted pianist and violist. The program will include works by Bach, Handel and Mozart, as well as traditional Jewish songs and tunes from "Fiddler On the Roof." He will perform with his father, cellist Michael Gelfand, and pianist Karen Fisher.

Youngstown Area Jewish Film Festival. "Paper Clips," followed by questions and answers led by Jesse McClain, Boardman Middle School teacher and Holocaust scholar, will be held at 1 p.m. at Austintown Movies. Cost is $4 in advance at the bursar's office or $5 at the door.
"Ushpizin" will be shown at 4 p.m. at Austintown Movies. Cost will be $4 in advance at the bursar's office or $5 at the door.
Holocaust Photo Exhibition. In conjunction with Liberty High School, Natalia Aleksiun of Touro College will speak on inter-war Jewish life in Poland and the Holocaust.
