Area donates $276,927
YOUNGSTOWN -- Area viewers of the Muscular Dystrophy Association's Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon pledged $276,927 during the 211/2-hour event.
The telethon was broadcast locally on WYTV Channel 33.
The 41st annual telethon concluded at 6 p.m. Monday, with $61,013,855 pledged for the organization's programs of research and services to benefit people with neuromuscular diseases. Officials said the $61 million was a national record for the telethon, which returned to Las Vegas after a 12-year stint in Hollywood. Lewis, 80, returned to star in the telethon despite a heart attack in June.
16-year-old girl killed
WARREN -- Police are investigating the death of a 16-year old girl whose throat was reportedly cut by another girl when the victim answered the door at a Peace Avenue address early Monday. Warren Police Department had no information Monday night.
Band Night to be held
BOARDMAN -- The Boardman Spartan Marching Band will present its 2006 Band Night at 7 p.m. Saturday at the football stadium, located behind Boardman Center Middle School. In addition to the Spartan Marching Band, under the direction of Thomas Ruggieri, high school bands from South Range, Canfield, Leetonia, Brookfield and West Branch will participate. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Senior citizens are admitted free.
New troop to be formed
YOUNGSTOWN -- Lake to River Girl Scout Troop 501 is being formed at Youngstown State University's Paula and Anthony Rich Center for the Treatment of Autism.
The new troop will provide opportunities for special pupils, ages 5 to 13, to participate in enriching activities, learn new hobbies and skills and just have fun. Troop organizers are hosting an information meeting at YSU from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 14 in the Presidential Suite of Kilcawley Center.
Parents and pupils will be able to meet the leaders, ask questions, discuss potential activities and sign up for the troop. Troop meetings will be at the Rich Center for Autism on the YSU campus. Individuals willing to volunteer to teach a skill or hobby are also encouraged to attend the Sept. 14 session.

Fire Engine Cruise
LORDSTOWN -- Lordstown Dairy Queen and Warren Fire Equipment are sponsoring the 2nd annual Fire Engine Cruise from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Dairy Queen to benefit Someplace Safe Inc. All fire departments and firefighters from Trumbull and Mahoning counties have been invited to bring their firetrucks and engage in friendly competition. A helicopter from STAT Medevac will be on display. Someplace Safe is a nonprofit agency that provides emergency shelter and crisis intervention to victims of domestic violence and their children.
Estate planning session
AUSTINTOWN -- The Salvation Army of Mahoning County is hosting the 14th annual Estate and Charitable Gift Planning Institute, featuring Roy M. Adams.
The topic is "Unending Changes: Coping With the Good and Bad." It will be at the Austintown Public Library from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday. Lunch will be included. Continuing education credits are provided for attorneys, CPAs and financial officers.

Fall fish sale planned
CORTLAND -- Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation District will have its annual fall fish sale starting at 2 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Mosquito Creek Reservoir parking area off of West Main Street.
The fish are known as grass carp and are used for pond vegetation control, the SWCD says, though it cautions that the fish are not adequate for control of filamentous algae, also known as pond scum. The fish are $13 each.
