PHILADELPHIA -- Ryan Howard homered in his first three at-bats, raising his major league-leading total to 52, and the Philadelphia Phillies rallied after wasting a five-run lead in the opener of their second straight doubleheader split. Atlanta kept Howard from going deep in the second game, winning 3-1 in 11 innings after scoring the go-ahead run on catcher Carlos Ruiz's throwing error.

MILWAUKEE -- Rookie Scott Olsen (12-7) allowed one hit in seven scoreless innings as Florida (68-68) completed a three-game sweep and became the first team since the 1899 Louisville Colonels to return to .500 after falling 20 games below, according to Elias.
Nationals 5, Diamondbacks 3
WASHINGTON -- Austin Kearns hit a two-run double off Brandon Webb (14-6) in a four-run eighth. Washington became the first team win four in a row when trailing by two runs in the seventh or later in all four since the New York Giants against the Phillies and Boston Braves and from June 25-28, 1923.

CHICAGO -- Barry Bonds homered for the second straight game, giving him 729 for his career, and San Francisco remained 21/2 games back of San Diego. Bonds, 26 home runs shy of Hank Aaron's record of 755, has five in his last 11 games and is hitting .500 (16-for-32) during that span to raise his average from .235 to .263.
Astros 2, Mets 1
HOUSTON -- Roy Oswalt (11-8) retired his first 18 batters before Jose Reyes beat out a bouncer to shortstop leading off the seventh. Oswalt struck out nine and allowed three hits in 71/3 innings.
Padres 2, Reds 1
SAN DIEGO -- David Wells held Cincinnati to one run and five hits in six innings his first game since his hometown Padres acquired him from Boston on Thursday. The Reds dropped 21/2 games back in the NL wild-card race.
Rockies 12, Dodgers 5
LOS ANGELES -- Matt Holliday homered to cap a six-run fifth, Byung-Hyun Kim (8-10) allowed two runs and eight hits in 62/3 innings for his first win since Aug. 2.
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Yankees 10, Twins 1
NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez hit two more homers and drove in five runs, and Darrell Rasner pitched six impressive innings for his first major league win to lead the Yankees. Bobby Abreu doubled three times, and Jorge Posada and Robinson Cano added three hits apiece for the AL East-leading Yankees, who took two of three games from Minnesota in a possible playoff preview. New York leads Boston by a season-high nine games in the East.
Angels 2, Tigers 1
DETROIT -- Kelvim Escobar gave up only an unearned run and Vladimir Guerrero homered to lift the Angels. Guerrero tied the game with a shot over the left-field fence in the fourth inning, and Orlando Cabrera's RBI single in the fifth put the Angels ahead.
Blue Jays 6, Red Sox 1
BOSTON -- Gustavo Chacin kept Boston's bats quiet with six shutout innings, and Bengie Molina had four hits for Toronto. Chacin (7-3) allowed two singles, one day after A.J. Burnett pitched a three-hitter in a 5-1 victory.
Royals 7, White Sox 3
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Ryan Shealy and Angel Berroa each homered and drove in three runs, and Mark Redman pitched seven strong innings. Paul Konerko and Jim Thome homered for the White Sox, who maintained their half-game lead over Minnesota in the AL wild-card standings.
Athletics 10, Orioles 1
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Dan Johnson hit a grand slam in his first official at-bat back from the minors and the A's gave Hayden Penn a rude welcome in his return to the majors, scoring nine runs in the first inning. Mark Ellis and Eric Chavez also homered, and Esteban Loaiza (9-7) pitched eight strong innings to win his fifth straight decision for the A's.
Devil Rays 7, Mariners 6
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Kevin Witt hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth inning, leading Tampa Bay past Seattle. Ty Wigginton and Greg Norton each hit two-run homers for the Devil Rays, who are 16-32 since the All-Star break.
